EB; Half a tab', mate. I just sort of fell into the parlance of accepting everyone, by now, would know what I mean. A / The crushie has just come to refer to what I pour out of my tablet crusher. Half a campden tablet.
Funnily enough; Not so long ago, I slung it in there Twice. Thus I had four gallons of water with a whole CT in there. Slung the lot away!
I always ask myself, see: " Am I doing Anything different from last time? Because last time worked just fine. If I do This, could it be the thing that ruins it for me this time? " Then, I don't do it.
Beer never fails me.

Bert; Pretty much as my last post on here, to be honest. The water Noel passes has always worked. I like the results. I see no reason to change. And, collecting water in a butt really does sound like more drama than turning on a hose.
I don't even bother to offer my horses rain water. And, god knows, they must damn near drink me out of house and home here. Metered too. I just find their plumbed in, automatic drinkers less of a chore.

EB; Your vigil is over! I have before me the very first pint from FV 5. I humped it up onto the window sill. Unplugged the heater. Shoved the syphon pipe straight in (third FV in a row that's gone into; Uncleaned) And drew a pint off.Exiled Bradfordian wrote:This poses quite an interesting question - I shall be watching with interest to what happens to FV5
It tastes just about exactly the same as the very first pint I drew from the very first FV of this consignment

I was right in my hypothesis then; Crushies can kill stuff in water. But, that very water dilutes them so much they cannot then bother yeast. And nor do they have any adverse effect (The kernel of this whole, non deliberate, 'experiment') on the bare malts.
So, there we have it, once again: The Answer

This CT thing is really bugging me! Why does 1/2 a tab and a whole tab make such a difference to 4 gallons of water?

I can drink eight pints and three shots a night and feel just peachy, next day. But, if I consumed twice that amount? Sixteen pints and six shots?! F**k help me in the morning! Probably for a few f**king days there after!
See? A campden tablet's only a small thing. Why cut it in half? Because I've always done so. It's always worked a treat. Doubling the amount ~ or even doing away with it altogether? No. Why would I?

And, I've just found DrDextrin advising someone, on the Making Equipment board, with regard to the ability of campden tablets to keep long standing water sweet:Ditch wrote: I was right in my hypothesis then; Crushies can kill stuff in water. See? Consensus with my views. Crushies are obviously just strong enough to do what we ask of them, without going beyond their remit and taking things into their own hands.DrDextrin wrote:Probably a dash of bleach would work just as well, but campden tablets don't seem to have enough staying power.
The answer; Independently backed up

Sounds like you're going out on a limb to me...
Happy brewing,

Just had my first pint of "ditch's". Nice but slightly yeasty. I put it in the keg on Sunday with 50g sugar to,prime then went away for a few days. On Tuesday it leaked from the drum tap so mrs simania put it into the garage so that might have had an effect on it.
Re: " Ditch's Stout " Master Class ....
Double post.
Just poured another. The yeasty flavour isn't too offensive and leaves pretty quickly followed by a really nice slightly bitter aftertaste. If I wasn't feeling fluey and hadn't been out on the lash for the last 4 nights then I'd quite easily get a few more of these down me tonight.

Shouldn't f**king worry about it, Hector. If it tastes good and eight pints makes ye completely forget the plot of that police drama ye were watching last night? All is well!Hector wrote:Final gravity is 1012....started at 1052, is that ok...I cant get my head around this

Si; Ye wife shifted it out to the garage? Hmm. Now; I'm not a big bloke, by any means. I know when I'm lifting four gallons. I don't walk the same.
And, unless your good lady happens to built like the proverbial soviet shot putter, is there not every chance that she may have inadvertently 'disturbed' the beer a little, on that long old journey?
I imagine that could very well knock up a bit of yeast .....
