Brewing Sunday

Post by vaudy » Sun Jun 17, 2007 6:22 pm

Not having brewed for a few weeks, and being down to halfway through my last 5 gallons, I decided that I had better brew 10 gallons today (normal batch volume).

Saturday night - prep the water boil and treat as per normal, however when I lit my LPG burner it was clear that it needed a good clean.
To remove it from the boiler it is necessary to remove two hex set screws, as you can probably guess these sheared leaving a opening for cleaning at the back of the burner and preventing it being used.
I won't be able to carry out a repair until Monday at work.
That was the end of my brew session :( , I had a brain wave in the night (always dodgy), somewhere in the garage I have another gas burner, be it a lot less powerful. This was found and I managed to wedge it in postion, back on target to brew (only 5 gallons due it being less powerful).
Sunday morning omitted the boil for the water treatment.
Water temp raised (slow), mash ok.
The burner was not able to raise the temperature of the wort higher that 95 deg, and this took a long time, I have now split the brew in two and utilised my burco boiler which I use for keeping the sparge liquor warm.
The boil is now vigorous in both boilers, this took all afternoon, about 1 hour to go.
Will send some pics of the burner etc.
Hopefully I will conclude without further drama.

Cheers Vaudy :=P
