With the amount of hops you put in it's a wonder you don't have to chew your pints

After having a discussion with SD the other day I'm wondering whether I should be dry hopping as opposed to increasing the aroma hops, some of whose aroma will be lost during ferment :?

I'll have to try dry hopping soon
I've dry hopped my SS had a sample the other day (small shot glass....come on i'm allowed that!) and it's a real face full of styrians

It's going to come out the keg resembling silage if you try to cram any more hops into the thing man!

Here's the hop schedule:

46.00 gm Challenger [6.80%] (90 min) Hops 31.6 IBU
42.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (90 min) Hops 8.5 IBU
30.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (15 min) Hops 3.1 IBU
45.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops
15.00 gm Styrian Goldings [2.00%] (Dry Hop Kegged Duration) Hops -

It's in all the way to the end! as you can see I used 45g Flame Out (sounds impressive) Hops then 15g in a muslin sack.

What do you think?

MMMmmmmm Styrians

Looks good to me, and probably smells even better to you

I've never tried flame out hops either :? In theory I prefer the idea of flame out hops to 15 min aroma because with the resting period after flame out, your 15 min addition get at least 30 min to add bitterness :?

My first introduction to dry hopping was in a kit (Great Eastern) I added 20g Bramling Cross for 5 days......and what a difference it made! IMHO you definately get value from the aroma hops by adding at Flame Out or as we like to say in the midlands "when yer unplug yer boiler" or by dry hopping aka "chuckin in a bag'er ops"

Did you add the dry hops in the serving keg, secondary or primary ?

Well, the brew went smoothly although I seem to take longer this time (last time I did the mash and sparge, and left the boil until later so it just seemed to take longer). I used 1.1kg of malt, 25g of Styrians full boil and just over 5g for last 15mins. Blimey, those Styrians smell gorgeous!. Got about 6.5litres after adding a bit of extra water for 1.040. Managed to get a much clearer run-off this time with the grain bed filtering. Sorry no piccies of the brew, but here's a bottle from the first mini-mash (normally kept in the dark!)

and the lauter tun:

These are 10litre tile grout buckets from Tile Magic - yes they are food grade plastic and cost £1.95 each (sadly no lids)

Top job Dave - The beer looks great.

Since moving AG I've noticed the beer clears so much quicker and there is far less crud in the bottle.

J_P,

Couldn't agree more, after 6 days in the fermenter, the first AG was almost clear. Can't wait to try some!.
The Admirals reserve was brewed about 8 weeks ago - its still not clear (however, the Linthwaite - Brupaks - was brewed 3 weeks later and is clear and really drinkable).

Cheers,
Dave
