Fruity/flowery American IPA - Cascade/Nelson - thoughts?

Post by daf » Fri Aug 08, 2014 5:10 pm

I've a piney/dank IPA about to be bottled - when I opened up the lid to bung in more dry hops SWMBO said it smelled like the bins! Tastes great though...

Therefore to use up more of the hops in the freezer compartment to make room for more ice lollies - how about this IPA recipe, using Northern Brewer to bitter, and Cascade and Nelson Sauvin for aroma? The last two additions will be cube hopped at around 80 degrees C.

Main question is about the grain bill - do I need to add the Carapils and light crystal or should I go straight with the Maris?

Looks nice, I love Cascade and Nelson Sauvin together. I would lose 10g of Nelson and add 10g of Cascade, then make up the the IBU difference with a little more Northern Brewer. Reason being I find Nelson can overpower and drown out the Cascade flavour/aroma when they are used in equal amounts. I have found that 1 part Nelson to 2 parts Cascade is a good balance. That's just me though, everyones taste buds are different :)

Okay - we're off. I dropped the Carapils and the recipe remained all ticks for the style. Currently mashing at 66 deg c for 90 minutes.

WHAT A COMPLETE BERK!

Guess who didn't check what hops he had?

Turns out I didn't have any Northern Brewer, so I put all the Nelson Sauvin in for the boil. Luckily it recalculates to over 50 IBU anyway.....
