Hi Guys, I still havent tried underletting yet, but I have come up with another question whilst planning to do it for my next brew day, what happens if you HLT is on the same level as your mashtun will gravity still be enough to get all of the mash water from the HLT to the mashtun without leaving any behind in the HLT

The level in both tanks will become the same, so you'll get about half in each depending on the size of each vessel.

You'll need either gravity or a pump.

Mine are both on the same level and I use a pump. You'll end one too if yours are on the same level.

If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

A very informative thread, thanks!
As a new to AG brewer (so new I haven't built my system yet

) this has given me something to think about. I can brew good beer by the dump and stir method or I can brew good beer by underletting, however underletting is less work.
I hope I got it right

I have a tall HLT, which means that usually there is enough in the HLT to get the sparge water into the tun . . . I also have a pump

Thanks for the concept this will also stop me spilling grain all over the lip of the mash tun and having to wash it back in.

6 brews in and I was showing this to a biab pal last week, I think he wanted to stone me, truely the best thing since sliced bread in my brew day and no draining the first couple of litres either just let the herms pump at it after a 10 min rest.

I have been underletting since my blog started and i'm not changing back to tipping and stirring. Handling 20lb plus of grain and stirring with a paddle has long gone. Thanks for all the advice . I use a 15mm transfer tube to the bottom of my tun. Happy Brewing

so do you underletters just allow enough liquor in to wet the grains, rather than measure it beforehand?

I add the full amount of mash liquor when I underlet. Normally followed by a quick stir. Check temp and pH. Close tun and have a cup of tea.
