Iodine Test

Post by Seadart » Fri Jun 22, 2007 9:29 pm

I remember reading that there was an Iodine test to see if you had the right sugars (?) coming out of a mash. Is this still done?

Coz I seemed to recall it was a pain to do. Mind you it was over 20 years ago that I read it and the memory is like Vossies beer a bit Hazy

The test is staight forward, take a sample of the wort and grains placed on a white saucer, add a drop of iodine, if it changes to blue starch is present, if no change sugars are present.
The test does not differntiate between the different sugars.

I do this as a matter of course, if the temperature and length of time is correct for the mash starch end point should be reached within the mash time period.
