Lemonade brew?

Post by james_m_r » Wed Jun 20, 2007 9:18 pm

Without wanting to be laughed off the forum, I pose to you the following question:

Could I not throw some lemonade, sugar, maybe a few squirts of Jif and some yeast into a carboy to produce a lemon tasting alchoholic drink?

The reason I ask this is I would like to brew something the wife would enjoy so she too can experience the joys of home brewing but the trouble is she only drinks alcho-pops & Martini Asti.
I would also no doubt enjoy the experiment.

What are your thoughts on this?

Cheers Reaper, DaaB.

I must have read every post in "other brews" now but was curious to know if you could use a fizzy lemonade drink to brew with.

One way or the other I will be giving this a go at the weekend.

G'day James

When you brew your lemonade could you post the recipe and keep us updated? I am keen on branching out beyond beer and my ginger beer (which i personally think is the bees knees).

If you're going to ferment lemonade, try using champagne yeast.
:)

Good evening DrSmurto

I wasn't going to post the recipe for fear of being black balled from the forum, but seeing as you have requested it I will.

Cheers
James

Doesn't lemonade have a preservative?

I think so. Will this effect fermentation in some way?

The point of the preservative is to stop infections...like with yeast.

In the end though, lemonade is just carbonated sugar solution with lemon flavouring. Why not use sugar in water?

Well you have answered my question then, dont use lemonade.
I think I will have a go at the recipe Reaper kindly dug out.

Let me just reiterate that this brew is not for me!

My wife's lemonade recipe:

juice of 7 lemons
250 ml sugar

boil five or six lemon rinds, yellow down, in a saucepan with the sugar for couple of minutes.

pitch into lemon juice which is conveniently located in a jug, top up to taste (usually about 1.5 - 2l), and serve on ice.

I have one for cream soda too, if anyone's interested.

the 1st drink I ever made was the "The Experimental Zone" alcopops on yobrew as an experiment, all I can say is LEAVE IT ALONE...
I now have 5 demijohns, 3 * 40 pint barrels and 2 fermenting buckets and I find that I need more, and more AND MORE.... mind you, it is good fun

Due to broken demijohn (I only had one) this brew has now been re-scheduled for 30/06/07.

Regarding Reaper's recipe, what sort of %alc will that give?

Isn't that an awful lot of lemon juice?

Does it ferment out dry and therefore require some added sweetener?
