Way to Amarillo

Post by marcarm » Mon Sep 22, 2014 6:36 pm

Made my first extract kit at the weekend, WTA which has taken off over the last few hours!

Such vigorous fermentation that I've never seen with any of the kits I've made before.

Anyway, I have 50g of Amarillo hops left over from making it, so was thinking of either using some of those to dryhop, maybe after 7 days and planning on fermenting for 14 (all being well), or I could use those hops to make another batch of WTA.

Does this beer benefit from a dryhop, or will it be nice as it is? If I should dryhop, how much should I put in there?

I've pretty much only made kits as they were meant to be, have not tweaked anything as yet, so all this is kinda new to me.

All advice appreciated.

I have recently made this as my first extract brew and I really liked it , I would try it as is first time and then decide if you want to dry hop it next time you make it.
I am going to make my second batch this week , I was surprised how easy it was to make and how much better it was than my favourite 2 can kits . I tried my first bottle after only a week and it was clear and nicely carbonated , and now after 3 weeks it is a really good beer.

I recently drank that last bottle I had of this and it was amazing. Been in the bottle a few months but was just as good even after a few weeks. I'd recommend doing it as is, produces a lovely beer.

Split the batch in two. Leave half as-is and dry hop the other half.
I'm just here for the beer.

Good choice - by splitting the batch it gives you a good basis of comparison. I have used Amarillo hops many times, its a very nice hop to work with. You should get some wonderful extra aroma out of your dry hopped version. CheerZ

Was this the Way to Amarillo from BewUK. If so can I ask how you have come to have 50g of hops left over. My pack only came with 50g of Amarillo. I love a good hop aroma so personally if the pack was already opened I would dry hop with them. If they're still sealed in their vacuum pack then they should store well so I'd keep them for a future brew

I just had a panic then, I thought I'd messed up thinking I've not added the right quantities when making it #-o

What I actually did was follow the recipe and I ordered from another site, as I wanted to do another extract recipe plus I needed some equipment. Equipment was cheaper on the other site, plus adding it all together meant I got free delivery

I bought the extract and hops separately, so the hops came in a 100g pack.

I bottled mine about 10 days ago without doing anything extra to it, as I wanted to try it as intended. It's now in the garage, and clearing, albeit slowly. Hoping to leave this till December before trying it.

I opened one of these last night, been bottled since 3/10.

When poured, had a nice head and good carbonation, but it tasted of sulphur. Best way to describe it is the smell/taste you get when red top matches are first struck. Not had anything like this before, hoping there's nothing wrong with it and the taste will fade over time, but a bit disappointed with it. I will say fermentation was fine, no off smells at all.

Anyone had a sulphur taste with a brew? Did it fade over time or is it destined off the drain?

Can anybody let me know what the kit contains? Ive got 50g of Amarillo spare from another brew so thought I could just buy the rest of the ingredients separately.
