Porter

Post by Queeg 500 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 12:36 am

Just tried my London Porter that was barreled three weeks ago, and all I can say is that was one of the worse experience of my drinking life. Not sure whether that is because of the problems in the brewing (stuck fermation, old yeast. etc.) or wheter portor is just a nasty drink. Still. at least Quegetta now has 40 pints of feed for her pumpkins.

Buy one from a shop and see if it's to your taste.

I don't like 'brown ale' as such and would never brew one :-&

I must admit that I had never previously drunk a porter before and was expecting something akin to Guiness, which I can take or leave depending on my moods. I might have to buy one now to see what 'factory' made ones are like.

I wouldnt put the taste too far from a stout really , so the fact you dont like it suprised me if you dont mind guiness. are you sure its not infected or something? it should be like a thinner stout with a slightly sourer taste I reckon others may dissagree .

I'd agree, should usually be able to just see through it when in a glass, albeit very dark brown/red

I think you'll be hard pushed to find a good bottled Porter in a supermarket etc, unless you have a specialist wine/beer shop nearby

I buy from Beers of Europe and always get a few stouts and porters in each order, Sierra Nevada, Anchor and the Welsh Plum porter are very good.

sorry your brew didn't work out. always a pisser tipping it out, only happened to me once but quite upsetting

Porters vary greatly. Some brewers call a beer stout where another would call the same one porter. The histories of the two styles are completely intertwined too.

Guinness is the most bland stout imaginable and my experience so far of kit porter and stout brews is that they have a lot more character - but are fairly accessible. So I suspect something is wrong with your batch.

I couln't see a thing through it, put about an inch in the glass to see and couldn't even see the bottom of the glass

It does smell a bit vinegary although it doesn't taste it. Not sure what you mean by ropey

Quegetta has happily taken it off my hands for her pumpkins, and as she knows how fed up I am she has 'persuaded' me to buy her a new fridge/freezer :( ... but that does mean I have the old one and I can have my own beer-fridge

Try Fullers London Porter. It's very nice. Waitrose do it and I think Sainsburys do in some stores.

.. every cloud my friend  ropiness is when you pour it it will appear a bit thick and oily , it will pour like a "rope" rather than a liquid if you know what i mean.

Yes Fullers London Porter is just about the best bottled porter I know. I've tried lots of others but none quite hit the nail on the head like that one.
