Adding Hops

Post by chris68 » Sun Jun 24, 2007 8:10 pm

What is the general consesus on doing this:

Bung them into the Primary?
Bung them into Secondary
Use a bag to house them in whilst they add flavour
Boil and steep?

Any other ways of adding them ?
Is there a right way or a wrong way to add them to your brew?

I would always use a hop/muslin bag that has been boiled for 5 mins if you are going to add dry hops to secondary or keg.
Not sure if dry hopping in the primary works as most of the hop aroma will be carried out with the co2.
I have also boiled hop pellets in 500ml of water and then left to cool and settle for 30mins adding the hop tea to the keg before i rack onto it, carefully pouring as much of the liquid in as possible without letting any of the sludge get through!

just to jump on the bandwagon a bit...

If you were to use the boil method, how much would you include for extra flavour and aroma, 10g for 10mins, then steep another 10g?

ive got a coopers australian pale ale that im about to prep tomorrow and i want to up the hops somewhat, ive got in some progress which ive heard are good for aroma if that makes any difference.

cheers

hijack over..
