Halcyon Pale Malt

Post by Dave S » Thu Nov 06, 2014 7:41 pm

I've recently taken advantage of Brew UK's 10% off offer and bought some Halcyon Pale Malt. Reason: apparently it is the PM used in Draught Bass, which is one of my favorite draught beers, so I thought I'd have another crack at a clone. Yeast will be a Burton strain as it's almost certainly that which is used in the original. Also, according to Roger Protz it contains a small amount of maltose syrup, so might get some of that.

So, has anyone else used Halcyon? and does it bring anything to the party?

Thanks for any views on this.
Best wishes

Dave

It's just a nice efficient, adaptable English base malt akin to Maris Otter. Nutty and bready notes, low colour, high enzyme, moderate protein, all around top-shelf stuff. Happy brewing!

I have used it many years ago, in fact I do recall seeing it for at least 15 years. Made good beer if I remember correct.

Thanks chaps. The bready and nutty notes sound just the ticket. I think Brew UK are one of the few suppliers that routinely stock it. I'll report back on how it turns out - when I get round to brewing it that is :) .

I had a couple of bags in 2010 from a brewery in Wrexham.
It was good stuff. About the same as a good Fawcett or Crisp malt.
Didn't notice anything different than any decent Pale malt.
The Doghouse Brewery (UK)
