Help converting this to a partial boil

Hi all

Now I've got my water testing underway, I'm looking to brew up a clone of the Lagunitas IPA and found this recipe https://www.brewtoad.com/recipes/laguni ... ct-version

Only problem is I've not got a full size boil kettle (only have a 15 litre pot). Could anyone recommend a way of converting this recipe to a partial boil size? - I.e. Do I need to adjust anything or can I just reduce the amount of water in the boil from 25l to 10 and then add the rest of the water in the fermenter?

Never done this Andy so someone may come along with a better idea but I would liqour back as you suggest, there are bound to be some differences in the finished beer though as you will have a much greater concentration of wort in the boil and the dynamics of that are just different. My other tip would be to give yourself an early Xmas present of a bigger boiler. :D Theres a thread about it on here right now.

Well I haven't done less that a full wort boil in I'll bet 15 years so take this for what it's worth: you can make award winning beers with less than a full boil but likely you'll need to adjust your formulation. The biggest thing is going to be really crappy hop utilization and it will show up big time when trying to make IPA's. As the original gravity of the wort increases, the hop utilization falls off so you will need to increase the hop loading to counter that (yeah, it will cost more, sorry about that). Also, I would think that since the wort is more concentrated in the boiler, you will likely get more carmenization going on which although not a bad thing will tend to darken up the brew and perhaps generate some flavors that a full boil will not. Again, this will effect some styles more than others but it can make producing really light colored beers more problematic. Anyway, I hope you find that helpful. :D

Thanks both, appreciate the replies.

Ive started trying to warm up the wife to me buying a full sized boiler as it sounds like it will be much better in the long run, but have been "advised" that i have to wait until the new year :shock:

You could always do a partial mash, partial boil. I use a 15 litre pot, mash 2.5kg of grain, boil and hops as usual but add DME to up the abv in the last 15 minutes. I then just cool and top up to 23 litres. Have had some great results....The attached pic is about as light as I have been able to get though...Image

Just noticed a typo. .I top up to 23 litres not 2 litres! Now edited...
