Cant get it here. Someone will need to send me some.6470zzy wrote:What about using S-33? Every bit as solid in performance as S-04 but without the tartness and it certainly fits the British bill.

Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
SO whos going to make a suggestion for an all British JBK ale.. then we can tweak it?
Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
My only concern was that if its too standard and classic it doesn't showcase innovation or distinguish itself from the more standard commercial bitters on the market. How is it going to taste different? maybe some less classic uk hops like first gold, admiral, etc?
Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
Guys, I haven't done anything using British hops, or in a British style, so I am really looking forward to trying this.

The man lead from the front on this one - though it appears that he's removed direct reference from these pages when he did the update :barry44 wrote:It has to be Jim
Jim's OSB (Standard/Ordinary Bitter)
Original Gravity (OG): 1.038 (°P): 9.5
Final Gravity (FG): 1.010 (°P): 2.6
Alcohol (ABV): 3.73 %
Colour (SRM): 7.8 (EBC): 15.3
Bitterness (IBU): 31.2 (Average)
93.33% Maris Otter Malt
6.67% Crystal 60
0.8 g/L Challenger (9.28% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
0.8 g/L Fuggles (4.76% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
0.5 g/L Fuggles (4.76% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
0.3 g/L Irish Moss @ 15 Minutes (Boil)
Single step Infusion at 66°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes
Fermented at 20°C with Safeale S-04
This is what he used to refer to as his "house" bitter although im not 100% on the bittering hops being gospel - might have been what I had to hand at the time - provides the necessary framework to build tho I feel. Pitch in guys....

Re: JBK Own IPA/ALE
Yeah, while I used to regularly make my 'house' bitter recipe with slight variations each time (depending as you rightly said on what hops I had lying about), I've learnt a lot since I formulated that recipe. While it's still a nice session bitter I think we can make something a bit more special.
Therefore maybe Jim's ESB instead?

HELL YES. Let's get some ideas down...Jim wrote:I think we can make something a bit more special.

I reckon 5.5% ish, pale malt, crystal and some speciality grains to give it character...open to ideas though, haven't made much in this style.
Like challenger for hops, maybe goldings and fuggles too would be a good combo

S04 yeast ? Works well, easy to get hold of, doesn't ferment down to 1.005 like Nottingham

Maybe leave the yeast option open for experimentation? Could get some interesting variations that way
