For me, cost isn't an issue. What is, is trying to make the best beer I can. The fact that it needn't cost very much is a welcome bonus. The whole Kit/AG thing isn't a valid comparison because you're not comparing like for like. What's really should be asked is.....how does the cost of making mediocre beer compare with the cost of making great beer?
The choice is fairly simple. If you want to make cheap booze quickly and with a minimum of effort and are quite happy once past the first mouthful or two, then stick to kits. If you enjoy the craft of brewing and enjoy drinking good beer then AG is where it's at. Cost is largely irrelevant because the differences need not be massive.
