Really? I would have thought it was the other way round! Is this a quirk of the system?BrewerBen wrote: I tend to mash in with 30L water and sparge with about 8L with minor adjustments depending on the grain bill to aim for 25L in the fermenter.

It's the way the system is designed. It's set up for full volume mashing a bit like biab so that the HLT, mashtun and boiler is all in one vessel for a nice compact brewery. The sparge isn't even necessary as you can just leave the malt pipe to drain and just top up the volume in the boiler. Makes it even simpler but I like to get the most out of the grain and the sparge volume is small enough for me to just use a small stockpot on the stove for it.
Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
Ben, I also have started sparging (batch? With just a bucket of 78c water poured as slowly as poss through the grain ) I think it does help with efficiency. The rest was some thing I read on john palmers website which suggests it helps liquify the sugars some before going to mash temp. Tried a brew without this step last time out and efficiency was reduced. So I too am getting closer to a good standard procedure in my BM (for ale/lager - I don't brew the exotic continental stuff). It's quite a learning curve from the bag of grain in a pit on the job method (which I made a few good beers from)
Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
Just thought i's post a update on this, fermentation has gone well and is down to about 1.013 so time for the dry hop.
Wieghing hops out, 40g of hops being used and split across 3 infusion balls:

Sanitising infusion balls in a steamer:

Filling them up with hops. When put in the ferementer they sunk straight away but the last time i used them they did end up floating on top of the beer.

Hydrometer reading looks around 1.013 and the sample tasted a smalled great.

Sounds delicious. I bought some Galaxy hops recently, but haven't used them yet.

I've just bottled this up, all 42 of em. Gravity ended up at 1.010 making this around 5.9%. It will be tough waiting for this one but will no doubt try a bottle here and there, purely to check the carbonation of course.
Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
Just cracked one of these open (just to check carbonation of coarse) and tastes and smells great (even when i cant smell much as i have a cold). Carbonation is good so they are now moved into the pantry for a few weeks which is at a cool 10 - 12 celcius.

Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
Really good, probably one of the best beers i've brewed. This reminds me I really must do this one again.
Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
I managed to get my hands on some galaxy hops, bit hard to get hold of at the moment, vanilla porter to make then will do this one, hoping it taste like new world by marstons

Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
WOW this is awesome , really nice and it does remind me of NEW WORLD, If I wanted to increase the mouth feel, do I mash at a higher temp or maybe add another grain ?
Cheers All

Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
Great photos. I'd love to get a BM 20l but the old budget restricts that. I've never dabbled in AG before but I guess its only a matter of time.
Re: AG #47 Galaxy Delight
I'ts a good one is Galaxy Delight. I can't believe almost a year on this thread keeps popping up. A year of brewing and many great beers produced and galaxy delight is still one of my fave's. I keep meaning to do it again but its a case of so many beer's to brew and not enough time. Although saying that i've just ordered more kegs so doubled my storage capacity so i don't have gaps between batches.
I have to admit the BM is a luxury and isn't really necessary to produce great beer. I made many great beers with a cool-box mash tun and electrim boiler but the BM does simplify the process and is very good if you have space constraints. The grainfather is also a good option at a very decent price and although i was after more capacity so went with the 50L if i were to choose between a BM20 and grainfather it would be quite a difficult decision

After a long delay I see Rob, The Maltmiller, is selling the AG kit again but with Galaxy pellets.
