Is it ok to use thick bleach to clean a FV?
Is it ok to use thick bleach to clean a FV?
Haven't used my gear in about two months and had it stored in the shed so thought I would give it a proper clean. Thought I would bleach it, squirted in a load of thick bleach by mistake. Is this ok to use, I can't find a definitive answer? If not will just buy a new FV tomorrow. I filled it up to the top, but must have used about 1/5 a bottle...my mind was elsewhere.
Thanks

Probably be ok with plenty of rinsing. If you have a campden tablet, you could fill it with fresh water and the tablet to help neutralise the chlorine. Then rinse again.

No tablets. Just plenty of rinsing I guess. Thanks

I usually wipe my FVs out with some thick domestos bleach now, then give them a really good rinse.
I don't know why but bleach makes me think they are cleaner than what starsan does.

That was my thinking when going to clean it. I will rinse it alot!

The actual amount bleach can be diluted and still kill everything is pretty amazing.
1 capful in 20l is still enough. The trouble with thick bleach is that it can be difficult to rinse as it is designed to stick to stuff

Hmmm. Not really sure if I have the balls to just hope and see! I have rinsed about 5 mk tues worth of time. Might give it a soak in soapy water aswell then.

That's becuse bleach is not starsan, they are 2 different things, bleach is made from NaOH ( caustic soda) , ie, I would not wash my dishes with a bar of soap, but I do wash my hands with washing up liquid if you get my drift.GrowlingDogBeer wrote:I usually wipe my FVs out with some thick domestos bleach now, then give them a really good rinse.

Somewhere, someone posted a podcast link which had Charlie the maker of starsan, and he says if using bleach add a little white vinegar to the water bleach mix (do not,,,,and I will say it again just like he did, do not mix vinegar and bleach together before you put it in the water, cos you will gas yourself with chlorine) and he said get the cheap thin bleach , easy to wash away
I wrote down the ratios somwhere, I'll post it when I find it. Not sure if I will find the podcast link thou.

Edit2: the ratios, but it would be better if you listened to the podcast so you understand it fully, then if you gas yourself it's not my fault

5gallon water
1oz of 5% bleach
And 1oz of white vinegar, added to the water bleach mix

StarSan isn't intended as a cleaner, just a sanitiser.GrowlingDogBeer wrote:I usually wipe my FVs out with some thick domestos bleach now, then give them a really good rinse.

Whereas you can just squirt Starsan on and go, chlorine based bleach needs a lot of rinsing. If you leave any chlorine based bleach in your fermenter you'll end up with a lot of chlorophenol in your brew (TCP/medicinal aroma and taste).
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
