Stout

Post by wasted » Mon Jul 02, 2007 9:08 pm

My Wherry is gurgling away in the bin. I will leave it for a good 10 days or so until I bottle it in 2 litre pop bottles. I’m already thinking of what I’m going to brew next. I think I will try a stout, as I’m partial to a drop of the black stuff. At least the clarity of the beer won’t be an issue. When I’ve drunk bottled Hop Back Entire Stout it suggests on the bottle that you swill the sediment and pour it with the beer. How care fell would you be pouring homebrew stout from the bottle?

never bottled a stout only ever barrelled. however i did put a couple of litres in a plastic pop bottle (testing and a present for r kid) but came out with no head and wasn't as good as the batch in the barrel. primed it with a good table spoon of brewing sugar.

coopers do a cracking stout. done it twice both with dark spraymalt and brewing sugar.

Some yeasts taste good, others don't I'd try your beer without yeast then in the last quarter pint try it with. If it's awful at least you didn't waste a whole bottle!

Thats what i will need to do, experiment. I might even invest in a keg, though i should think that it would be easy to lose count of beers drunk with a handy tap on the shelf.

I’ve been looking at web prices for stout kits. The recommended Coopers kit is very cheap when compared to Brupak Black Moor Stout. My experience of the cheaper kits is not good compared to Woodforde’s. When I made John Bull bitter , I added ordinary white sugar, would I get better results if I used brewers sugar? :?:

i made the coopers stout up with 50/50 dark spray malt and glucose, although i did add coffee i dont think this stout really needs it.

Dont let the cheep price tag put you off, coopers do some exceptional brews, alternatively dont let the price tag of brupacks put you off either, ive yet to try them but they get rave reviews around these here parts.

My first ever brew was a harvest stout from youngs and at 7 quid, it was an absolute bargain! cheep as chips and very drinkable to boot - i used 1kg of glucose, and although when you do your first brew you drink through rose tinted teeth it was very nice all the same.

I've just had a bottle of Titanic Stout, which was pure nectar. Lovely coffee finish. I've got a kit of Muntons Gold Imperial Stout to start soon. Will I get similar results with this kit? And if not, how can I alter it to get something approaching what I've found in the titanic? How would I add coffee, and would it be worth it?

Next time you have a coffee, put a bottle of stout in it. Much better that way!

out of all the stout drinkers recommendation on this forum i think only coopers has come out. heard the block moor is a bit disappointing, especially at the price. i do mine with half brewing sugar half dark spraymalt. however it does lead to a "heavier" drink but my drinking buddy for paddy's day this year loved it and wondered what all the fuss was with guinness. (we had been out all day when he said that, even i was puffing out my chest and baragring my brewing powers!)

I've got myself a Coopers stout kit, but the supermarket where i bought it (Roy's in Sudbury) didn't have any spray malt, so I'll have to go elsewhere. Any recommendations for malt? also someone suggested glucose is that from the homebrew shop?

I've just made up a Muntons Premium Irish Style Stout and used 500g Muntons Dark Spraymalt along with some leftover Light Spraymalt and brewers sugar (dextrose).

The colour seems pretty good but could easily handle being a bit darker - I think 1Kg of dark would be bang on as the Muntons Dark Spraymalt isn't super dark.
Next Up : Something for the summer
Primary : Nothing
Secondary / Conditioning : Nothing
Drinking : Mosaic IPA

Stouts don't need to be black as pitch - if you're judging on the basis of Guinness (the Budweiser of stouts!), DON'T!
