Suffolk strong ale help

Post by Snipersunset » Thu Jun 11, 2015 10:12 pm

I brewed one of these kits up as per instructions and left it to condition in the barrel for a week. I've just given it a try and it's really sweet, is that how it should taste? Does it mean it's gone bad or does it need more conditioning?

Any ideas guys?

Cheers

as per instructions
how long did you ferment for and did you take a hydrometer reading to check it had finished

Come on WA let me in on the ground floor with your idea you know I'll go along with it, I am a member of the ELC :)

Hippy, it was in primary for 2 weeks and steady fg of 012 for 3 days. Are you thinking the sweet taste is from it not fermenting out fully?

Sniper

Have you brewed anything similar before?

I haven't done the Suffolk Strong kit, but understand that it's a fairly high gravity brew, so 1.012 is a perfectly respectable FG.

If your previous brews have finished in the 1.008 region and have had higher bitterness levels, it may just be a case of readjusting your taste buds.

That might be the case then monkey, but I think my wherrys were about 010. With not having tried this before wondered if I'd messed it up as it tastes sweeter than any beer I remember drinking before, it's not undrinkable but does taste homemade to my novice homebrew taste buds.

Anyone brewed this and can say if it's just a sweet tasting brew?

Sniper,

I brewed this a couple of years ago and my final gravity was 1.014

I remember when young the hop taste was marmalade, sort of a sweet citrus seville orange type thing.

Maybe that is what you are tasting and if so it will diminish as time goes by.

That could be it westy, the sweetness seems to have died down but now I'm getting a strong tingling sensation from the head of the beer? To much CO2 perhaps? And if so how do I get rid of it?

Cheers
