First full mash (2nd attempt)

Post by Buzz » Tue Jul 10, 2007 4:02 pm

After yesterday's disaster I've managed to get the temperature right this time and I'm an hour or so into my first mash :D

I'm using a Dave Line recipe from the big book of brewing and have got 5lb pale malt and 12oz flaked rice mashing at 150f in a Bruheat boiler using a Ritchie mashing & sparging bag. In an hour I'll draw off the wort and start the sparging...

Well done for getting straight back into it Buzz, I'm sure you'll find it goes better this time.

Have a great brewday 8)

This brew will just taste so much better for the experience. Hope it keeps going to plan.

Ok, I've hit a problem.

I read that you shouldn't continue sparging when the last runnings hit 1.006 - is that adjusted for temperature? I've just taken a reading of the last wort coming through and its bang on 1.006 but at 110f - with the correction for temp this makes the SG 8 - so can I keep on going??

If not, can I top up with water as the SG of the collected wort looks way to high - the recipe says sparged wort - SG31. Mine reads 28 at 130f = SG47.6 :?:

you could sparge a little further but as you've gone better than the required gravity, I'd stop now and top it up either during the boil or when filling your fv.

if you can it's better not to go much lower that 1010, it supposedly makes a better beer, but you can go down to 1006 if you're short of pre-boil wort

(which I am quite often!)

by my reckoning (assuming a 20deg calibrated hydometer):-

1006 @ 110F corrected to 20deg = 1013
1028 @ 130F corrected to 20 deg = 1040

What volume have you collected?
A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

I'm short on volume, just 18 litres.

Don't forget you'll lose a little to evaporation during the boil, at a guess say 10%.

Also, unless I'm missing something shouldn't you be expecting around 1050 og?

Is it too late to sparge some more? I reckon you've got a lot of sugars left in the grain, I definitely do this if it's not too late.

However you will still make nice beer as long as you scale down your hops....

It's a light ale and the recipe suggests collecting sparged wort at SG31 - I'm a complete novice as far as AG brewing goes, so I'm just following the book. I've got some sugar to add to the boil and the final collected quantity after the boil should be SG of 39 apparantly. I guess mine will be higher but that's fine.

I've let the grain go now so I'm onto the boil (although I forgot to fit the hop strainer so have had to empty the boiler and start again)

Thanks for all the help, it's been invaluable so far. I'll go easy on the hops with the limited volume. I don't have a program to tell me what to adjust so I'll just play it by ear...

Actually I calculated your recipe wrong. I calculated with 5kilo not 5lb. It's just by my reckoning your final runnings were high at 1013. However, if you've collected 18 litres at 1040 then I make your efficiency very high, 90%+ (??!)

If it really is 18 litres @ 1040 I'd carry on with the recipe, maybe scale down the sugar if you want to keep it light and keep hops as planned.

good luck :)

All the best Buzz, you'll find that you learn so much from this first brew. I'm sure that the beer you produce will be great AG brewing seems to be really forgiving! I don't suppose you've been taking pic's have you? 8)
