king keg top tap, how does it work?

Post by BIGTRACTOR » Fri Jun 02, 2006 6:02 pm

just bought a king keg top tap and it now has a brupaks fixby gold in it in the garage and now i am trying to be patient to let it clear a bit, just wondered how these kegs work? don't understand how when the float system floats below tap level how beer will still come out, is it to do with pressure?, if so, there aint a lot in my barrel, the beer level is still just above the tap, so beer comes out, but very slowly. reckon that once it drops below tap level, flow will stop :(

got an adapter to fit a sodastream for the barrel as our local hardware shop exchanges sodastream cartridges, now looking desperately for one at local car boot sales ( typical, saw loads at the car boots before i got into beer making, now i can't find one for love nor money)!

Pressure is required to dispense once the level falls below the tap. This pressure will either be naturally produced CO2 by the yeast acting on slow fermentables or CO2 introduced via the valve on the keg lid. I always had to add a squirt of gas from a cylinder after pouring every 2-3 pints.

Best bet would be if you can somehow attach a hose to the sodastream with a typical tyre valve connector on the end - I've seen it on a website womewhere. Then you just need to drill a hole in the top and bolt in one of the stainless steel tyre valves that are used with alloy wheels (about £2.50.) I use a hand held CO2 tyre inflator with mine. I know what you mean about those soda-streams, nearly £50 new and worth nothing second hand.

Even if you use the CO2 chargers supplied by the people who make the Kegs it all works out about the same I'm afraid - I just like this system because I can use the same gun to blow up my bike tyres :)

There's already a perfectly usable valve in the King Keg lid, BigT's just after a cheap SStream cylinder if I understand correctly.

So you can screw in the soda stream cylinder directly to the lid?

hi, yeah, already got the adapter thats actually fits on the sodastream cannister itself, its got a sort of nipple ending  that you can press against the c30 fitting and give it a squirt.

just need the soda stream cannister itself, dont matter if its empty, cos its 4.50 to exchange empty one for full one or about £18 to buy a full one from scratch . will hopefully get hold of one next car boot on sunday,
