Caragold

Post by injac » Sun Oct 04, 2015 7:05 pm

Good Brewday yesterday - finally seem to have gotten rid of the burnt wort problem - it looks like the false bottom sold by GetErBrewed was causing a hot spot at the base of the kettle. Binned it.

Recipe for 19l:

Maris Otter - 89.2%
Caramalt - 10.2%

60 min Mash at 67 degrees celcius.

60 minute boil:

Citra - 12.5g at 60 mins
Citra - 7.5g at 30 mins
Cascade - 19.5g at 10 mins
Cascade - 30.9 post boil hops.

IBU - 35.5
OG - 1.047

Yeast - US-05

Hit most of me numbers but ended up with 16.7 litres of wort at 1.046 so close enough. Lost 2.3 l to trub so will try to account for that next time.

Sounds like a really nice APA kinda thing, benefiting from first rate English malts. Well played. Can't wait to hear how it turns out. What kind of colour did you get in the final beer from 10.2% CaraMalt?

Probably a very light colour, almost piss colour. That's in a nice way and I'm sure it will not taste like weee. :D

I did a brew based on ghost ship, but no crystal. It was almost the same percentage of malts used in this brew. And it was very nice, but it did look like piss :=P and I can't wait to brew it again..

Not quite piss like...pale gold but certainly not pale piss. Mind you I don't know what yours looks like. If it looks like this though....get to the Drs.

Oh, by the way injac, I'm a fan of the 30 min Citra addition too. I just did the same in my Black Rye-P-A. I like how it contributes a cool lemongrass, sugary breakfast cereal kinda fruitiness. Combined with late Cascade as you did would make for a very fine APA, I'm sure.
