thanks, I always get confused at that regarding starters but what you say makes perfect sense.

I will be making lagers through the winter I've done this for a few years now and this is what I have settled on and this year I will be using WLP800 which I have experimented with before.

1. make a lager with approx OG 1044 using a 2 step starter 1.5L + 1.5L and raise the temp to 19°C at about 1020-1018.
2. make another lager with the entire yeast cake between 1048-1056 and ferment at 8°C without raising the temp, WLP800 will ferment at this temp.
3. make another lager with about 2/3 of the yeast cake.

Recipes will vary with one 100% lager malt and the others using 5-10% carapils, hops will be saaz, hallertauer, perle.

The biggest improvement is large pitching rate fermenting at constant low temp and long cold conditioning, -0.5-0.5°C in my opinion.
