Citra?

Post by Rogermort » Wed Dec 02, 2015 12:42 pm

I'm new to brewing (five AG under my belt including one in conditioning) and I've been brewing a recipe for an American Pale given to me by the instructor at a one-day Home Brew Store course. At my third attempt, it's a beer I'm really happy with but the recipe calls for Citra and now I can't find any. :(

Any pointers? Are hop shortages like this common?

I've been brewing with whole hops rather than pellets BTW.

Yes, unlikely to see any of this year's harvest on the home brew market. Very poor crop in the US.

Do you have a link for that? I know they were threatening a poor harvest there earlier in the year but the tail end of summer/start of autumn was good for them overall. Although the likes of centennial are down quite a bit

It's central europe that got [censored], very poor german, czech and slovenian harvests I think. Maybe that's whats having a knock on effect as brewers there go after US hops and will get them before the homebrew market can buy them

We ran out of Citra in May and couldn't get anymore. So we altered our APA recipe by increasing the Chinook to compensate.

I spoke to Faram's on Monday, asking if we could get any Centennial or Chinook, not huge amounts either, 15-20kgs of each. He said yes fine for 2016 crop but all they are getting this year is what's already been contracted for and none spare. We have enough left to do 2 more brews and after that I think the APA will be shelved for a year, I can't see the point in altering the recipe again. These are the only foreign hops we buy, all others are English, so not such a bad thing in my opinion. English hops are much cheaper anyways.

Yes we will, I don't have a date as yet but they will be in stock. Funny thing the hop market, I have just received some 2015 Centennial and Chinook but am not able to get any of the 2015 EKG harvest yet!

I sit corrected! Haven't got 20kgs of each have you Rob?

Think our problem is we didn't contract for them this year. I've only just taken over the stock ordering for work so I'll wash my hands of the previous incompetent! We're still on 2014 crop of Goldings but do have this years Fuggle, Challenger and First Gold. Which are lovely.

So can I order some in advance through your site? Or will you not know the price until it arrives?

We wouldn't open a pre order till we have a delivery date and it's likely that we won't have one till a couple of days before they arrive. I know it's a pain but that is where we are

I was pleasantly surprised to see Rob had Galaxy pellets in stock this week. Bought some for my hop pile of shame in the back of the freezer...
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
