Ag1 a bit murky
Ag1 a bit murky
So ag1 an American IPA has been in the fermenting fridge at 20 degrees for around 5 days, took a sample to check gravity and it's not to far of being done ! But it's not looking to clear, in fact you can't see through it at all and I still have some pellets to dry hop with which I imagine is going to add to that
Will crash cooling at about 2 degrees for a few days clear it up or is there something in my process that could be done to help clarity next time around
To be honest it tastes ok but it's still nice to have a clear beer

Re: Ag1 a bit murky
Are you using US05 or similar 'Chico' strain? It is very likely it is a case of the yeast not floccing out yet. Crash chilling should help, the dry hops can add haziness but again with time will drop. Plenty of time for it to clear yet and finings etc still an option.

Don't panic, it will never be clear at this stage. Once it's done fermenting, I like to leave my beers at fermenting temps for at least 4-5 days after FG has been hit. You can crash chill it and most of the yeast will settle out within a few days. You can then fine with gelatin and leave for a few more days before bottling and even if it's not crystal clear at that point it will continue to clear up once the bottles have conditioned.

Using nbs west coast
It was about the same before adding the yeast though tbh.
Il throw the dry hood in soon give it 4-5 days and drop the temp for a couple of days, see where we stand

did you let the trub settle in boiler before transferring to fv? i put a sheet of voile over my fv's when transferring from boiler to catch the protein clumps that make it through me dome filter.
Re: Ag1 a bit murky
Yes, I have a braided type filter, but I did pump out of boiler as I have a plate chiller

Time will help - it's just yeast in suspension right now, but taste is king where you are. Leave it another few days before bottling/kegging, and that's it. You'll end up with a haze whatever, but it shouldn't be opaque.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
Re: Ag1 a bit murky
Push it thru a 25micron water filter before you prime it...it will come out as bright as you like, no need to fine it also

Re: Ag1 a bit murky
if your going to filter you'd be better off with a 1 micron , id imagine 25 would let a lot of the haze through
Re: Ag1 a bit murky
I've done my first AG and let it ferment out for 3 weeks it was quite murky but then crash cooled for about 4 days then racked into the keg where it looked a lot clearer. 2 weeks later and I had a pint yesterday and it was crystal clear and has another few weeks to condition. Time is your friend it will clear eventually but there are things you can use/do to help clear your beer so don't panic.

how exactly do you put a beer through a water filter?Haydnexport wrote:if your going to filter you'd be better off with a 1 micron , id imagine 25 would let a lot of the haze through
Also in answer to the original question....time is the thing. I leave my beers in FV for 2 weeks for primary, then rack to another FV and leave for 3-4 days at 12 C and then bottle and leave for 3 days at 20C and then back to 12C for 4-6 weeks conditioning

Ag1 a bit murky
I brewed an AG dark amber ale on 31st October which I kegged around two weeks later and then chilled right down for a week. It didn't clear as I'd expected it to so I chilled it down again and on December 1st used (for the first time) the 'Gelatin fix'. By the following weekend - December 5/6 - it still hadn't cleared (although tasted fine) so I was loathe to serve it and left the keg in the serving fridge, unmolested, for a week. Poured a pint yesterday and it's as clear as brown glass!
I'm new to all this but have decided that time is a great healer.
BTW, a Woodfords Wherry kit I brewed on the same day isn't a patch on the AG!

Re: Ag1 a bit murky
I tasted it yesterday
, tastes pretty good so no issue with it but it's a long way from clear. I've dropped it down to 2 degrees now and Il rack it off to secondary this week and keep it chilled for a bit, hopefully it will cleAr up a bit
