Columbus and Chinook Pale Ale

Post by gobuchul » Sat Dec 05, 2015 4:38 pm

Just weighed out the grain and hops for the brew day tomorrow for this 40 litre recipe.

A bit of an experiment, main bittering done by the Chinook, then the late additions will be Columbus.

We see how this turns out.

9.00 kg Pale Malt 90.0 %
0.30 kg Cara-aroma 3.0 %
0.30 kg Crystal Rye Malt 3.0 %
0.20 kg Cara-Pils 2.0 %
0.20 kg Crystal Malt 2.0 %
50.00 g Chinook 60.0 min 32.7 IBUs
10.00 g Columbus 60.0 min 10.0 IBUs
15.00 g Columbus 15.0 min 7.4 IBUs
25.00 g Columbus 10.0 min 9.0 IBUs
30.00 g Columbus 5.0 min 6.0 IBUs
50.00 g Chinook 0 min
20.00 g Columbus 0 min

Any opinions?

I've done a red ale with those two hops - must do a pale! Looks good.

I bet that was tasty. Columbus and Chinook are perfect for the sharp graininess of Rye IPA too.

Just took a gravity reading.

It's down from 1054 to 1012 in 6 days.

I was a little worried as I had a loss of power to my workshop and the temperature went up in 23C overnight in the fermentation fridge.

However, I had a taste from the trial jar and it was excellent. High hopes for this batch. I think the little bit of crystal rye helps as well.

It was fantastic, one of my best beers to date.

I was drinking this last night after 2 weeks in the keg.

It's very good. Although next time I think I will reduce the bittering hops and increase the later additions.
