Hi,
I've just acquired a 100 litre shiny setup from a user on here.
I've decided to add a herm system to it as I like the benefits to clarity and consistency I get from it.
My dilemma is this.
Do I put the coil in the 100 ltr HLT which takes a while to heat up as it's only got a single 2.4 kW element. Or do I use a 30 ltr buffalo boiler I have spare which heats up a lot quicker and use that as a dedicated heat exchanger.
Any advise greatly appreciated
Cheers
Mick

As I understand it 30l is pretty big for a HERMs boiler! I use 40l buffalo's at the moment for my HLT and copper and they don't heat up that quickly!

imho you will get a much better control using a kettle element in a small saucepan circa 6-8 pints max.
the lag using a 30l+ pot of liquor would be a significant factor.
using copper tube for the hex coil you will only need a couple of meters max,
If clarity is the goal, have you considered simply using a pump to vourlaff (jug back- i cant spell it ..) just plumb up and recirculate the mash before the drain/sparge till it runs clear and you can start to collect it..
which ever way you go have fun,

I agree, the response time of a big boiler will be too slow. The best heat ex I made was in a 3.5 industrial kettle , kettles are good because they have built in safety switch
Recirculated through HLT is viable if you want to stop temp drop but lots of insulation is much better
