Redditch Secondary Regulator

Post by alexlark » Fri Feb 13, 2015 1:57 pm

Can someone tell me if it is possible to remove the hex screw from the top of this reg and fit a bottom entry pressure gauge? If yes, what size thread is it?

Thanks

Yes it is possible. Some of mine have unscrewed reasonably easily, others not so much, in fact I broke the Allen key on one!

If you do get a really stubborn one, I ended up taking 'everything' else off/out of the body and heating with a blow torch (being careful not to melt the aluminium) to loosen the screw; this worked very well on two, but the third had a plastic washer hidden underneath the screw which melted and dripped down inside, making cleaning it up annoying.

The gauge thread is 1/8" BSP, if I recall correctly (the gas in/out threads are bigger). The official cornelius gauges have unusual long parallel threads that allow them to be screwed right down to seat on a washer at the bottom of the hole, but I got some cheapo ebay gauges with a more standard tapered thread and just used a liquid PTFE to seal them.

EDIT: BTW if its new to you, could be worth testing it before you go to the trouble; some of mine (which I got 'sold as seen') had leaks and a couple even had internal leaks with the valve, that allowed the output pressure to slowly climb up to the same as the input pressure.

Cheers

Thanks Kev, much appreciated. I see a lot on ebay without the gauge.

Yes, they do come up quite often. They can be quite good value, though I can't find a source of (small quantity) spares and quite a few of mine have had defects, so its not always been a bargain.

The small hollow tube about a mm or two in diameter near the bottom left screw here:
Image
is a spring pin, or at least a friction-fit pin. IIRC its job is to hold the plastic lever in the aluminium block.

My regulators are in storage at the mo, but 'I think' I'm right in recalling that when the lever is pointing downwards it is closed, i.e. preventing gas out of the outlet. If it helps to check, my regulators have the word 'open' formed in raised plastic on one side of the lever, which is only visible from the front when the lever is in the open position.

I've got a couple where I managed to fit a gauge successfully. The thing that threw me was that I only had metric allen keys and the hole was imperial....
