14 session beer recipes

Post by Clibit » Wed Apr 13, 2016 9:11 am

Just found this, 14 really interesting looking recipes of various styles around 4-4.5% ABV, from beer writers like John Palmer, Denny Conn, the Brulosophy chap, the mad fermentationist, Ron Pattinson and others.

Table saison, a 60/40 wheat/rye 2.6% beer, American mild, Session IPA with Mosaic, a malty Amarillo lager, oat mild, Vienna IPA, Cork stout, Berliner Weisse, Youngers 1851 table beer, English bitter.

That's a nice link and interesting that they actually put the ABV a bit lower than might be expected from am American site. I've used the Brulosophy one for a split batch before, am intending to crack open some of the fully conditioned ones this week (letting my liver recovery after the beer festival here last week).

I've put some of them into Brewmate to convert them to metric and to scale them, if anyone wants any of these let me know the volume required:

Oat Malt Mild
Saison de Table
Cure from Cork Stout
American Mild
Proper 1420 Dark Mild
High Noon Mosaic Session IPA
Johnnie's English Ale
East LA Lager
Hop Test Bitter
Rye Wit
Session Vienna IPA

Looking forward to trying the split batch ones myself don't drink then all before I'm back Image

Nice link and interesting recipes, I like a low abv session beer myself as long as the flavour is there. Can't drink much at the moment and a couple of pints of something lower in strength would be most welcome, may have to think about brewing that mild. Also nice and thirst quenching for the glorious summer I am sure we will get this year. Normally in the north east a high abv beer is needed in the summer for the alcohol warmth but this year I am sure we'll need lie abv refreshment!

I like the look of the East LA Lager. the colour doesn't match, probably cos I'm not sure how to sub the Briess Gold Pils Vienna malt, and also cos i subbed amber malt for the Victory in the recipe. Any suggestions what to do about the Pils Vienna and the Victory?

East LA Lager

Batch Size (L): 19.0
Original Gravity (OG): 1.042
Final Gravity (FG): 1.011
Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 4.13 %
Colour (SRM): 0.0 (EBC): 0.0
Bitterness (IBU): 30.6 (Average)
Brewhouse Efficiency (%): 75
Boil Time (Minutes): 60

0.000 kg Vienna (70.25%)
0.000 kg Wheat Malt (10.81%)
0.000 kg Amber Malt (5.41%)
0.000 kg Aromatic Malt (5.41%)
0.000 kg Crystal 80 EBC Pale/Medium (5.41%)
0.000 kg Acidulated Malt (2.69%)

17.0 g Amarillo Pellet (8.9% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil) (0.9 g/L)
14.0 g Amarillo Pellet (8.9% Alpha) @ 15 Minutes (Boil) (0.7 g/L)
14.0 g Amarillo Pellet (8.9% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma) (0.7 g/L)

5.0 g Calcium Chloride @ 0 Minutes (Mash)
5.0 g Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate) @ 0 Minutes (Mash)

Mash at 65°C for 60 Minutes.
Ferment with WLP940 - Mexican Lager. Pitch at 10-11C, Diacetyl rest on day 4 at 14-15C.

I was about to up these to full batch but as I havent tried the Grainpop with 10litre batches it might be a good way to get through all the recipes I want to try.

I can vouch for this one, made it a couple of years ago, it's from Chris Colby's beerandwinejournal.com. I've done adaptations of it too. "This is a dry stout reminiscent of Murphy’s Pub Draught, now sold in widget cans. Murphy’s stout is slightly mellower — a little less bitter with a hint of chocolate and caramel in the malt — than Guinness, and (in my opinion) also tastes better when carbonated with CO2, as opposed to pushed with beer gas. If you like session ales — and are disappointed you can’t find Murphy’s except in widget cans — this is a great recipe to try."

The Cure From Cork Stout

Batch Size (L): 10.0
Original Gravity (OG): 1.038
Final Gravity (FG): 1.007
Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 4.02 %
Colour (SRM): 35.0 (EBC): 69.0
Bitterness (IBU): 35.8 (Average)
Brewhouse Efficiency (%): 75

1.275 kg Pale Malt (77.25%)
0.160 kg Cane Sugar (9.83%)
0.140 kg Roasted Barley (8.43%)
0.050 kg Chocolate (2.81%)
0.030 kg Crystal 90L/240EBC (1.69%)

15.0 g Target Leaf (9% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes

Mash at 66°C for 60 Minutes.
WLP007 - Dry English Ale. (I used US05)

It only takes a minute to adjust the batch size and copy and paste to here, if you want a different batch size. Let me know.

You can buy victory malt here, I bought some from Brew UK to use for the hop test bitter recipe.

I've always just substituted Biscuit malt whenever I've seen a recipe requiring Victory.
