Ashbeck water
Re: Ashbeck water
Just tried Star San HB in Ashbeck water and it stayed completely clear.
Re: Ashbeck water
I use Ashbeck Water from Tesco but I use 7.5ml of Star San per 5 litre bottle and have never had it go cloudy, the last one was around 2 weeks ago and no prob but to be honest, its not the cloudy bit you need worry about, its actually the Ph level that is important, it must stay below 3ph to be affective. I would suggest you get a Ph Meter or at least some test strips to check it. I get my Star San from Rob - TheMaltMiller as i live in Swindon.

You do need to avoid cloudiness, IMO, for two reasons:Buster wrote:I use Ashbeck Water from Tesco but I use 7.5ml of Star San per 5 litre bottle and have never had it go cloudy, the last one was around 2 weeks ago and no prob but to be honest, its not the cloudy bit you need worry about, its actually the Ph level that is important, it must stay below 3ph to be affective. 1. The cloudiness is it essentially turning to soap, which I don't want in beer, not least for head retention, and I wouldn't was my gear with detergent for the same reason. The guy from 5 Star Chemicals said as much in a podcast.
2. Less of an issue in normal situations, but... Although it is still sanitising as long as ths pH is low enough, you are adding more ppm of the acids to get to that pH (the carbonates in the water have buffered the acid along with making it cloudy, if I understand correctly), and there is a point at which it is not technically food-safe without rinsing. That doesn't keep me awake at night, but I wouldn't just keep adding SS forever to maintain the pH, while ignoring the cloudiness.
Busy in the Summer House Brewery
Re: Ashbeck water
My apologise, I was trying to point out that using the correct ppm in 5 litres of Ashbeck Water should give a Ph level of below 3 which is important as to its affectiveness as a no rinse sanitiser. I had not heard of Star San making water turn to soap.MTW wrote:You do need to avoid cloudiness, IMO, for two reasons:Buster wrote:I use Ashbeck Water from Tesco but I use 7.5ml of Star San per 5 litre bottle and have never had it go cloudy, the last one was around 2 weeks ago and no prob but to be honest, its not the cloudy bit you need worry about, its actually the Ph level that is important, it must stay below 3ph to be affective. Re: Ashbeck water
Interestingly I've been having the same problem with starsan turning cloudy in ashbeck water within a few hours.
Three days ago I decided to try the malt millers version of starsan I bought as a replacement for my 3 year old original version which is running out. It's still crystal clear.

Re: Ashbeck water
Buster,
It was more the age of the starsan rather than its source.

Re: Ashbeck water
