Cheesy Aroma

Does anyone know what I mean by the cheesy aroma I detect in some beers?
If you do, do you know where it comes from? Yeast, Hops etc.
I was at the Kent beer festival yesterday, had a pint of Mordue Workie Ticket and thought they had given me a cheddar cheese roll instead.

The only thing I can think of that is remotely cheesy and is associated with beer is butyric acid, I only ever seem to smell it after a good long natter on the big white telephone!

Mordue Workie Ticket is usually a great brew, I've never had a "cheesy" beer...

Daab is right. It's old hops. There's a brewer I know who uses hops that are sometimes 10 years old - and 15 year old malt!! His beers are sometimes cheesy - and he's the first to admit it's the hops.
