pH pen tester

Post by MARMITE » Tue Jun 07, 2016 9:42 am

One of my pH pen testers has packed up so I'm down to my last one.
Any recommendations please as they don't make the same one anymore and I don't want to spend a fortune.

Look after the probe!

Store in proper fluid, rinse with deionised water before using and after. Dry the probe before using and after using on clean lint free (I use kitchen roll)
and it can last years, mine has. It does drift so buy a pH 7 & 4 fluid and calibrate before each time used.

I have almost run out of deionised water which I originally got from Wilkos.Unfortunately they now only sell topping up water which must contain additives and says quite clearly "not for human consumption" I would not use this on the electrode in case of damage.

Distilled, even RO would at least be better than tap.

I use the Tesco water too, and Hanna do storage solution (HI-70300) when you knock the little bottle over and lose the bit that comes with the probe!

Hanna are a bloody rip off with everything they do but to be fair excellent quality. However, for storage solution there will be more reasonable suppliers.

Your local "Grow shop" is a good place to get PH storage solution and buffers at a reasonable price.

Thank you for pointng me in the right direction, I wouldn't have thought to look at the hydroponics industry. I found buffers and storage solution made by 'Growth Technology' quite a bit cheaper than the Hanna ones.
