MACC IPA

Post by donchiquon » Wed Jun 15, 2016 4:48 pm

I'm thinking of brewing the Brulosophy MACC IPA on Friday. It's taken a while to sort out the substitutions (Thanks Rob @ MM!) and I'm still getting the hang of Beersmith.

The original recipe is here: http://brulosophy.com/recipes/macc-ipa-by-ray-found/

Has anyone brewed this?

Do my Beersmith figures look sensible? (my ABV came out 1% less so I dialled down the IBU's from 75 to 70....not sure if I should adjust anything else)

Thanks!

I got 3rd place in the American Strong beers category in the London and South East competition with a Double IPA version of that.

ABV 8%
OG 1.080
FG 1.018 (bit higher than intended)
IBU: 98

Grain:
63% Maris Otter
16% Pilsner
14.5% Munich
6.5% Sugar

2 hour boil.

Hops (IBU calculations from Beersmith)
Magnum @ 60 min - 33 IBU
Rest of IBU (65 IBU) made up with a 20 min flame out steep of Amarillo, Mosaic, Citra and Centennial in a ratio of (2:2:2:1)
Dry hop in same ratio, total will be about 9 grams of hops per litre of beer.

Do everything you can to keep oxygen out - ideally get a sealed fermenter and don't open it up aside from dry hopping and when you're ready to bottle.

Yeast:
Vermont Ale (Yeast Bay)
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

@barry44 and @ bunglebrewsbeer - thanks for the thumbs up - the combination of hops caught my eye. I'll stick a brewday thread up and let you know how I get on.

Cheers!

Thanks @Jocky - it's probably one of the first time I've not found loads of info about a beer on the forums. Good to know that some has (very successfully!) tested.

I ended up brewing this 3 weeks ago, but a bit slow to update as I also wanted to follow up quickly with the Brulosophy (m)Oktoberfest.

I used mainly leaf hops for the MACC IPA which was probably a mistake. There was so much hops that I only ended up with 18l in the FV rather than 21. On the plus side it smelt like the elixir of eternal life.

After dry-hopping with just over 160g I was left with 17l which I kegged and did a few bottles with. The smell at this point was crazy. I used gelatine in the keg to clear the haze. It's now been a week and I'll probably sample in the next few days. Can't wait.
