WLP005 out of date by 1 month

Post by Ulsterman » Sat Jul 09, 2016 11:50 am

Just discovered my WLP005 is dated BB 5th June 2016. It has been in the fridge all the time.

Have used out of date dried yeast before without issue (rehydrated of course).

Anyone think my WLP005 is a risk?

Make a starter as normal and you'll be fine. Maybe do 2 stages do you don't over stress it, as you will have lost a few viable cells.

As RZH said, make a starter, that is the way to go.

Just to add to the advice re a starter.... If you pitch straight from the vial, you will not have a great experience. 005 is a very fussy yeast that requires full volume pitching and careful management during the fermentation.

I have only had disasters with this yeast so you will get away with little.
