If there's spatter present its either been MIGed, or the welder is an incompetant buffoon with no business being near a TIG. Best bet is to rub them off with a dremmel flap wheel, but make sure to use a (blue) zirconium disk or youll contaminate the surface.Wonkydonkey wrote:If it's leakin then its faulty...if it not then I guess it's good. But APITA really as a dent like that will smore than likely Start leaking at some time cos of the slight cracking. I have noticed on a few (2/3) of my kegs they have been tig welded on the seams. Although the tig welding is good, it's the splatter around the weld which was not so good, because it's near the lid which has affected the sealing abit so making it more fiddly than others to seal.
Anyhow if it does eventually leak, (let's hope it's not full of beer) as its on the base a bit of tig welding will sort it.

Yeh I thought that when I rubbed my fingers around the rim, ooerr,, after it did not seal. I think they had a go at cleaning it abit . But not that well IMHO.

Personally I would contact the seller for a replacement while I could. There is a crack on a weld which could breach the integrity of the keg.
Re: A Warning to anybody thinking of purchasing these !
I bought 3 of these about 6 months ago, before I was really ready for them. The price dropped slightly and I bought another 3. The second batch went into use straight away and the 1st lot are still where I put them. They are still holding the pressure they were supplied with so dont expect any problems. I know what you meam about them cosmetically but if you see my kegerator you will know thats not important to me.

Thanks all. I've got no issues with other kegs which have plenty of big dents and a detached rubber base, but this one with the cracked weld is a worry.joe1002 wrote:It looks to me like it's at the top.Wonkydonkey wrote:as its on the base a bit of tig welding will sort it.

I've contacted Shane to arrange a return. As its faulty hopefully there'll be no issue.

Mine were fine, I cleaned them up and spent about 10 minutes on each with a cloth and some Bar Keepers Friend

Mine are OK
I've had 6 from these guys- a few immaculate and others pretty battered and dinged. For the price delivered I think they're great. I learnt a few lessons which tried my patience:
New lid seals are cheap, the seals mine came with, no matter what i did, still smelt of coke or lemonade syrup so i just replaced seals.
A smear of vaseline helps the O-ring seal. As others have mentioend I tested them full with water first..part pressurize and if the lids are hissing/ leaking around the seals give the lid a twist clock / anti-clockwise until they seal. Pressurize fully and leave them a few days to check they're not leaking. Once I was happy they were sealing well i drew a thin line on the lid which continued across the seal line onto main body with a permanent ink Sharpie pen and give the lid and cornie a unique number..this way you always keep the right lid with the right cornie and the line helps you align perfectly the lid next time for a quicker seal.
Mine are certainly battered and I tried to polish them up nice too but as long as they are clean and hold pressure, I'm happy! For £30 each still a bargain.

The Problem is you have to pay for return postage - and they come from the Republic of Ireland - the post office quoted me around £50 to return the 3 kegs to Shane which I didn't do, so I asked Shane for a partial refund through Paypal for me to keep the bad kegs, which Shane refused any refund at all.donchiquon wrote:Thanks all. I ended up keeping the best one out of the three, and sold the other two on ebay for £20

Did you try parcel for a more reasonable quote?daddies-beer-factory wrote:The Problem is you have to pay for return postage - and they come from the Republic of Ireland - the post office quoted me around £50 to return the 3 kegs to Shane which I didn't do, so I asked Shane for a partial refund through Paypal for me to keep the bad kegs, which Shane refused any refund at all.donchiquon wrote:Thanks all. If I had got some which I deemed not usable and they wouldn't send extras or arrange collection that would be a problem my credit card company would have to sort out; it's their money after all.

You should be able to get things returned much cheaper than that - use a courier company, not Royal Mail
I use www.interparcel.com regularly and ship stuff all over the world - good case in point being that I shipped to Norway recently (which is one of the dearest places in Europe to ship to) - 18kg for £23.

Re: A Warning to anybody thinking of purchasing these !
Exactly this. First up though, I should say that I picked up 3 kegs from this place and they were fine - a bit grotty (as expected), but structurally intact and I've been using them with no issues. But if you order something online that is not fit for purpose, then you can get a refund and if they want it back then they can pay the postage. Any quibbles and go to your card company and initiate a charge back. As a small business owner myself I can tell you that we are all terrified of charge backs so I would first indicate your intentions to the retailer and give him a(nother) chance to sort it out.sonicated wrote:If I had got some which I deemed not usable and they wouldn't send extras or arrange collection that would be a problem my credit card company would have to sort out; it's their money after all.

The above is all well and good, but usually the distance selling regulations apply. One of the benefits of being in a Member State

dont know how you would stand with used goods? regarding refund to credit card payment that is?
lifes what you make it!
A Warning to anybody thinking of purchasing these !
hmmm a highly pressured container that has a STRUCTURAL fault with it, I don't think there is a credit card company on earth that would like to risk that one....
EDIT I do know loads of people using these happily and a few who have had partial refunds for bad ones so maybe worth clarifying things and also doing what has been suggested re chargebacks.
