Sodastream adapter not fitting CO2 reg...

Post by donchiquon » Thu Sep 22, 2016 5:01 pm

I've been using a sodastream adapter and simple aquarium reg for a while to top up my pressure barrels and I've just bought a standard welding reg (from MM) to put together a portable tap.

The new reg doesn't fit the adapter, despite the adapter spec being:

"The male/output thread on the adapter is made to DIN477 / JIS m22-14 / W21.8-14 / .860"x1/14 (covers UK, Europe and Asia) specifications, which will fit industry standard regulators."

Am I missing something....is this a thread issue?...

Which adapters have folk successfully managed to hook up to regs?

Thanks!

Can't get more than a turn on the thread before it sticks

As long as it's tight and sealed, it should be ok. I use one of the little aquarium/simple regs for dispensing 'out in the field'. I did notice when I had to use a sodastream bottle in an emergency at home that my proper CO2 reg didn't screw on as much as the little one.

Thanks McMullan!

Unfortunately I can only get the adopter in one turn, so it's not sealing.

There's definitely something different with the threads.

I've seen a few folk on the forum are using other sodatream adapters to connect to standard co2 regs, so it looks as though I'll have to buy another.

I tried using the simple needle valve aquarium reg as a primary reg rigged up to a secondary reg, but the pipe work coming out of the aquarium reg started creaking and eventually popped off. At that point I thought I should probably opt for a standard primary reg to be safe!

JB Weld should sort it. Cover the male thread in that stuff, screw it in as far as it will go then add a bit old fillet and leave it to set.

Have you tried using 6mm OD John Guest tubing for the simple reg? Much better than PVC tubing, I found.

I'll need to reuse the adapter to go with the simple reg, so am going to try and find an alternative before doing something permanent...I'll have a look at the JB Weld though - not used it before.

So far I've found the flexibility of the PVC quite useful for topping up awkward to reach pressure barrels in the back of the kegerator but its clearly not been much use under pressure! I'll definitely have a go with JG tubing

Cheers!

All sorted. Ordered a sodatream to reg adapter from a German site.

Fits perfectly. Just got to fix my tap to something solid and the portable set up will be complete.

Seems that some of the aquarium CO2 reg adapters have different thread to a standard CO2 reg.
