Recipie Starting point?
Recipie Starting point?
I have never developed a recipe of my own before but am looking to have a go in the new year. I would appreciate some pointers on how best to understand what the various ingredients add to a brew. I am ideally looking to create something quite simple early on and develop that recipe
Some tasting notes of an ordinary biter id like to try and eventually replicate, Golden body, bright and clean looking: small white head. Nose of woody, earthy, nuttiness: with a hint of malty molasses. More malts in the taste than the smell: easy blend of flavours, fruitier than the aroma too, with a semi-bitter finish. With a final abv of about 4.3%
Any advice on creating the above, or where to start is appreciated.

Not really a help with your tasting notes but would recommend getting some software.
Brewtarget is free and good, Beersmith is about £20 and is very good,

What's your favourite commercial brew? Find a clone of that and then add personal twists to experiment.

To be dead honest I chuckled when I read that you want to create you first recipe and then provided such a detailed description of what you are aiming for. Simplify, aim for a golden malty beer with woody and fruity flavours, perhaps. Refinement comes with experience and knowledge.
Re: Recipie Starting point?
Thanks for the replies I'll give the software a go..
As for my favourite commercial brew, the tasting notes are from that brew, and all searches to find any form of clone have come up with nothing so far. So I want to eventually try and recreate it, but in the first instance I just want to learn how I go about putting my own Recipie together, As cilbert states maybe start with a very basic low abv session beer, if anybody has a Recipie along those lines? And then tweaking that, to grow my understanding.

Re: Recipie Starting point?
So what's the name of the commercial brew from the tasting notes?
Re: Recipie Starting point?
I always recommend the Greg Hughes book for anyone starting out. Loads of great recipes.

The Graham Wheeler one is also good.

The commercial brew for the tasting notes, is a brew made by a brewery local to me. Called Three Tuns, and its their signature XXX brew, but I've never found any Recipie that comes remotely close to it

Re: Recipie Starting point?
Have you tried asking them?
A lot of small breweries are very friendly towards home brewers, Brew Dog even published all of theirs for free.

You might want to ask for some of their yeast too...
"It is also home to the famous Three Tuns yeast, a strain that is 120 years old and crucial to the distinctive taste of the brewery’s beers."

Well I've emailed them, and see what comes back. Can only hope they're open to sharing.
