Oh and on my first few extract efforts I came up with very low OG - I figured out later that I was not mixing my top up water with the boiled wort sufficiently to get an accurate reading (also said something about my lack of proper aeration as well).

just an update.

many thanks for the advice guys... this has turned out to be my favourite brew on the go at the moment.

in the end a total of 1KG light spraymalt went into it to bring it to a worthy ABV.

The TCP flavour has now completely gone, and although i'm tryna save it for the SWMBO's birthday next weekend, i'm struggling like hell to avoid drinking it :? it's sooooooo morish! even if it is still cloudy.

likewise with my other brew done on the same day, the great eastern. they started out tasting exactly the same. i thought for a while that the chlorine levels must've been particularly high that day when i brewed (as i dont use campden tabs until now) but now that tastes awesome aswell :D

all in all, a result, and 40 pints of beer saved from the drain. i cant thank you all enough :)
