Is PTFE food safe?
My hop filter slides into the back of my boiler tap, but is a bit loose now and I can not get a siphon. I am thinking of a couple of turns of PTFE tape, but will that be ok in a 90 min boil?

Re: PTFE
I hope so!
PTFE is what they use on non-stick frying pans, it must have been passed as safe, I've used it for plumbing joints in my homebrew kit for ages. It'll not be damaged in a 90 minute boil, When I strip the joints for cleaning after a brew the tape is unchanged.

Re: PTFE
I use PTFE gaskets and PTFE tape too, I always assumed it was food safe.
Edit:
I just wikipedia'd it:
"While PTFE is stable and nontoxic at lower temperatures, it begins to deteriorate after the temperature of cookware reaches about 260 °C"
So I think we're safe
Also I found this cool -
"It is used in containers for storing fluoroantimonic acid, a superacid"
Which apparently is one of, or the, strongest acid. Pretty nifty for a material you can pick up from the DIY store.

Re: PTFE
ptfe is one of the most inert plastics, as well as very slippy
its one of the very few materials approved by the 'common wisdom of distillers' in their equipment and afaik few are more anal about the materials employed in the process than the chaps that chase pure ethanol.. just saying @Jim not discussing the subject..
