It's really sad news, I rem, ember buying my first mash tun and 60L boiler from John at HnG
I have said it some time ago, Use them or loose them, and I guess that there are enough retailers on line selling 'cheap' that the quality physical retailers can't compete. ... I know I'm guilty of buying my base malt from a brewery, and only buying speciality malts hops, and yeast online. Thats going to change in future once my base malt stocks are used up, I'll buy recipe kits from TMM ... Thats an online retailer we really need to keep.

John and Patsy left in September, 2013.
Cheers in Houghton have in recent time extended their shop and range of stock, but not like Hop and Grape was.

This is a shame. For me they are my local homebrew shop so I can just pick it up so no delivery costs.
They have always been very helpful since the start and will be sorely missed.

It is sad, H&G was my first supplier of malt and hops, also my first 10 gallon boiler and mash tun came from them.
But there again maybe I am partially guilty of their demise as I have not bought anything from them for years, we all like a bargain and go where we can get the best deal and those that don't/can't compete go by the wayside unfortunately.

Very sad news. I’ve been using the Hop and Grape for a good few years now and the service has always been exemplary. Does anyone know of any other LHBS in the North East that stock a similar selection of liquid yeast and grains?

Brewlabs is up that way isn't it? Or have they stopped doing the home brew thing?

Both excellent in their individual fields, but with little to no overlap.

I don’t have a LHBS anywhere near, so it is Internet orders for me, with some excellent and some not so good service so far over the last year.
This thread made me reflect, although slightly more expensive, particularly with the delivery: recommendations on the forum, advice over the phone and range and quality of products has prompted my first MaltMiller order this morning.
On the use it or lose it principle, I would hate to be complacent and regret not having supported Rob.

Breaking news (thanks Horden Hillbilly for alerting me): -
https://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/about-us/
In 2018 The Hop and Grape Limited ceased trading however the online store is to continue under the new ownership of Paul and Angela Shenton who run a similar small independent Home Brew store in Stoke on Trent. Paul and Angela hope to continue to provide excellent service to both existing and new customers.

Fantastic news. Enthusiasm will triumph in the end - well sometimes at least

. And a quick looks indicates they still have Halcyon Malt

Best wishes

Thanks Jim, thats promising. It'll be interesting to see how the website evolves now; it was/is certainly a different beast to the jolly brewer's currently quite modest shop.

They have also been selling off 'hardware' through facebook - found out too late however but maybe there'll be more coming on. Don't do Facebook nor ever want to.
I hope they have managed to get something out of transferring the business as I know they have been trying to sell for some time. I always made the point of asking how things were going everytime I went in the shop (which was fairly regularly as I always collected) and was able to comment on a couple of aspects of leases etc as I run a company in the commercail property field.
Although I really do wish them well I am a bit dissapointed they haven't responed to emails asking if things were OK (as soon as the site went down). I'm sure they had far bigger priorities on their minds but I have gone through a company collapse (the bloody banks fault not ours!!) albeit many years ago and our first priority was to keep in touch with customers - all of whom we managed to retain when we finally got re-sorted.
Still going to miss them and I do wish them well for the future but, as I much prefer to collect (and see what other goodies catch my eye), makes no sense it being loyal to the Hop & Grape banner. By the time you add postage, cheaper to buy locally so now trying Abbey in Kirkstall, Leeds
