Very dirty looking Krausen
This is my session bitter i do very often.I set it away yesterday and before i went to work this morning i give it a good stir as there was no activity in the airlock.I notice as i stirred it the film on top looked dirtier than usual. When i got home from work there was this dirtier than usual Krausen but it was fermenting away ok by now.
I know krausens get dirty but to me this looks dirtier than normal. The only change i made with ingredients was to use 1kg of granulated sugar instead of DME.
1kg granulated sugar.
50g choc malt (steeped at 65c for 30 mins)
30g EKG
1.5 kg bitter kit.

Re: Very dirty looking Krausen
It's the chocolate malt. None of it will have been converted to soluble sugars as would happen in a mash with diastatic malt or extract. Chocolate malt has no enzymes of its own.
Nothing to worry about other than the finished beer will likely be hazy and you may not get all of the the flavours expected from the 50g chocolate malt.

Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

Wainie,
Looks Great!
What was your OG with all that sugar?
If that was my kit, I would have steeped the choc malt at 65deg, let it cool and use it after 24hrs,
and I would have used 250gr choc malt not 65gr. Just to be sure!

OG was as always with this 20l brew 1.044.I never let the malt licor cool as i use it to get the fermentation temp upto 20c before i pitch.
I`ve got 80l in total now maturing ready for hopefully another hot summer
