Leaking CO2 Cylinder

Post by IanRMartin » Sat Jul 22, 2006 3:45 pm

Got my system from Norman this morning and i have just been out and picked up my Gas.
When i pressureise the system i can here gas hissing out of this gap (But only when the tap is tunred on it is not hissing when the tap is turned off!) as shown in the pictures. It is not coming from the reg or any where on the system it is directly beneath the tap. (which i have removed for the pictures).
In the close up picture can i Loosen the nut with out loosing all the gas in the cylinder.
OR does anyone have some advise?

Thanks Daab :)
Its fixed :D
all though i have to admit i didn't fully understand everything you typed  .
I got my spancer on the thin brass nut and could not tighten it anymore but when i tried to loosen it, it felt very tight so i gave it a bit of a tap :bonk (I have no fear in these sorts of stiuations) it loosened and after a couple of turns i could turn it with my fingers i kept turning untill it came out i figured any nut with full tank pressure on it would not be turnable by finger (Well i was hoping :stun )
Image
When it came out i is in two parts
Image
The tall bit had the PTFE ring on you mentioned and where it sits is a grove and the PTFE ring as the grove in as well, i thought about turning it over but decided not to instead i put a tiny bit teflon grease on.
The nut part has two o-rings
Image
inside and they looked in good condition so all i did was put a smear of teflon grease on the shaft that it goes on.
Then screwed it down with one tap to tighten and bingo presureised the system no leaking.

As always many thanks to Daab for your help.

Ian

PS i was a bit shocked when i picked up the cylinder i was expecting something about knee high.

Very nice, bet your as impatient as I am to try the cornie :P

Gas question, probably a DaaB specialiality.

I've got a dual reg. The dial nearest the cylinder goes up to 12 psi and the other goes up to 7psi.

To force carbonate would you us the 12psi until a steady reading is obtained and then move the cornie over to the 7psi, maybe lowering the pressure later based on individual preference?

Sorry DaaB, Yes there is a third guage for the cylinder, I forgot to mention it

Just found a label on the regulator....it helps if you look

Outlet 1 is 0 - 105psi, outlet 2 is 0 - 75 psi, outlet 3 is 0 - 2000 (cylinder gauge)

When I said 7 and 12 psi I was reading the Bar scale

Thats typical of me...always going to the bar 1st, without looking at anything else :P

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Jul 22 2006, 04:09 PM) Has Norm sold you a regulator without a pressure gauge. While they're not absolutley essential they will make life a lot easier? Looks like you got the 14lb cylinder, thats the smallest some places do. Where I got mine from ther were 7 and 14s available, both the same price  I went for the 7 as I dont have much space, a 14 will last for ages B)
Yes,
I should be able to get a couple of gauges shouldn't I?

IRM, I'm interested to see what Daab says with regard to no gauge....this is why.

I thought the bar scale was the psi scale. I put some water in the cornie and pressurised it to what I thought was 7psi. I then placed a wine glass under the tap and opened the tap.
The water smashed straight through the bottom of the glass which I was holding at a tilted angle, just as well, if I'd of been holding it straight the water and glass would have struck my hand :o
The cornie was actually at 75psi the max for that gauge. Just as well it wasn't the 105 psi gauge

I contacted Norman about regulators but didn't buy from him because he offered me one without any gauges.

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Jul 22 2006, 08:43 PM)Normaly the regulator has the gauge attached. Does you regulator have a tapping to take a gauge?
If not it'll have to fit on the keg or possibly fit in the gas line.
Yes I believe there are two tappings.

The two brass sticky out bits screw into the body of the reg so i assume they can be unscrewed and a guage screwed in.

Cool, I like the look of that..............

Boody hell £20, for a few more quid i could probably get a brand new reg with guages.

I'm seriously tempted to get a new reg with two guages.
I can then keep this as a spare or flog it on ebay
