BierMunchers Centennial Blonde
BierMunchers Centennial Blonde
Anyone here brewed BierMunchers Centennial blonde beer. Looks like it's got really low amounts of hops, can this be right?
https://www.homebrewtalk.com/threads/ce ... all.42841/
Also can anyone confirm the amount of hops in grams as I'm a bit confused with the difference between american Oz and UK Oz.
TIA

Re: BierMunchers Centennial Blonde
It's an American Blonde ale, which isn't very hoppy or bitter at all. It's meant to be fairly light and refreshing and served quite cold. It's also often brewed by smaller breweries and brewpubs that don't have lagering facilities to satisfy customers that want a lager. If you look at the recipe he says it's estimated at 21.6 IBU - for comparison a Best Bitter would be more like 30-35.
An ounce is 28.35g in most people's terms.

There's barely any difference with American Oz and UK Oz (but they are not identical!). But just like there is 16 Oz in a Lb, in the US there is 16 Fluid Oz in a Pint (20 in Imperial measures, so Gallons are all different too.).
(EDIT: I should have said, 'cos it is not immediately obvious, that the recipe linked here is taken originally from that "BierMunchers" link.)
(EDIT2: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=82202&start=60#p847502 Recognise it?)

Note true - here we are talking about the ounce weight which is the same in both countries.
It's the fluid ounces that are different - the US floz is about 4% more than the Commonwealth one, as they still use the "old" British floz which was based on wine whereas we switched to water in 1824.
In homebrew terms the big ones to watch out for is their gallons which are much smaller - 5 US gallons is 18.93 litres, whereas 5 imperial gallons is 22.73 litres.
Yes, Centennial Blonde is meant to be an easy-drinking style, and you need fewer hops when you're not dry-hopping.

Yes, that's what I thought too. But I'll often just Google-check some of my replies before posting them and was surprised to find in the first result https://www.conversionunites.com/conver ... o-ounce-uk. However, although insignificant differences, I'm beginning to think I got sucked in by some nonsense. "Fake news" perhaps? Apparently they have a lot of it in the States, mainly spouting out of their President?Northern Brewer wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 5:49 pm… Not true - here we are talking about the ounce weight which is the same in both countries. …

Re: BierMunchers Centennial Blonde
Why would you regard a random web designer in Quebec as some kind of authority on weights and measures? They've obviously got confused between ounce weights and fluid ounce volumes - the former were standardised indirectly in 1959 by an agreement between the various English-speaking countries to create an International pound (and yard) :PeeBee wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 7:19 pmYes, that's what I thought too. No need to rub it in; I can do that myself! Mistake, I know that, but as the difference was trivial and I wanted to get on with something else, so I let it go unfortunately.Northern Brewer wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 1:07 pmWhy would you regard a random web designer in Quebec as some kind of authority on weights and measures? Thank you for picking it up as otherwise that bit of silliness would have rooted in me head and come out at a later date. The irony was I was double-checking what I was saying (good) but not being very rigorous about it (bad).
But no harm done, and I could even top it off with a photo of a "BierMunchers Centennial Blonde" clone

Hopefully the author of the OP picked up from the recipe I posted not only a conversion of hop weights from the original ounces to grams (and a shift from the original 11 US gallons batch size), but also the hints in the recipe to allow for the really bad keeping qualities of American "C" hops. Actually I can't find a good hop age calculator to recommend just now (anyone else?), but those "BBC" hop pellets are a good start (they are somewhat more stable).
