Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
50g suits my taste, as for using a syringe - far too much faff. When I go out to a pub I tend to find a micro pub that serves straight from the barrel. I pay for beer, not head! If I wanted head I wouldn't be in a pub...
Beer is my drug of choice.
I don't need anger management classes, I need people to stop pissing me off.
No beer, no fun - know beer, know FUN!
Carrots may be good for your eyes but alcohol is better as it gives you double vision!

Thanks mad hippy.
I bulked mainly because I wanted to use different sized bottles.
Too much faffing to prime individually.
But that's another idea for my brewing learning curve.

Did you skim the crap off the krausen in the first 36 hours? You would normally expect to see a lot of brown floaters on the krausen at this stage. No big deal though as you should be able to rack off the beer without too much carryover.
Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
Carnot, didn't get a notification of your post. Just seen it as i've come to update.
No, I didn't touch it. I only removed the lid on day 9/10. Folk say don't keep looking (air?)
Any way, I've been reading alot of old threads on these Wherry kits, some over 10 years old.
I'm wondering if the manufaturers have tweaked the kits as loads apear to have stalled and many were mentioning how long it takes to clear.
As I mentioned in my other post it was quite clear when I bottled it and it happily settled at 1010.
It will have been at room temperature for two weeks Saturday and I can't see any haze.
I shall put a couple of small bottles in the fridge for tonight as I can see it wants to be tested NOW!
The small bottles are ex Desperados. Perfect for pouring into a large wine glass so I look sophisticated.

Yo WA.
Here is my brew in the wine glass.
This was after 10 days in the bottle, couldn't resist.
No idea why it's on it's side. No matter which way I turn it on my computer it's always on it's side in the post? Now, as I stated, it was clear after a few days.
I put a couple of bottles in the fridge and after a day they went cloudy.
Is this the 'haze' that is referred to? If so, how long till it clears again?
I have the rest of the brew outside, nice and cold at the mo, and am waiting patiently, but I doubt that will last.

Lewie - try saving some for consumption in say six months, you'll definitely notice the difference!

Lewie,
The Beer looks BLM!
Chill haze from the fridge, let it come back up a bit on temp and it will go.
How is the taste, smell etc of your beer?

Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
N.J. 6 months? You're hilarious!!
W.A. It was pretty good for a new brew. I must admit it did taste 'not quite ready', still very drinkable though.
Just opened one of the bottles I've got 'conditioning' outside. All them are hazy now.
Definitely better than the first. Excellent head on it and I really wouldn't be too fussed if this is as good as it gets. I'm liking it
Nice buzz to the bonce after a couple of good swigs.
I'm no Gilly Goulden but I'm getting essence of dragon fly with a hint of fairy dust.
I'm assuming the haze isn't going to cause gut ache? And will the haze only go if I bring it up to room temp or will it go after two weeks in the cold?

Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
Lewie, you need to brew more. I get a brew on every two weeks. I certainly don't drink 40 pints every two weeks so can put some aside to see how they mature and can honestly say most get better with a bit of aging. Obviously you need to have sufficient bottles and storage space. I have approx. 250 pints in my store and, no, you can't have my address!

Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
N.J. Coincidentaly I got one on the go today. Nelsons Revenge.
You don't drink 40 pints in two weeks? Ahhh, that's where I'm going wrong.
I'm a southern hemasphere rugby dance, I already know your address, besides which 250 pints? I'll see that on Google Earth.
The pic above is from a 330ml bottle. I tried a 500ml bottle and it wasn't nearly as good.
Will the smaller bottles 'mature' quicker or is it just that I picked a real good one first time?

Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
Lewie, did you batch prime? If so, I can't see why a smaller volume would result in a better beer...
I like to have a store of beers at this time of the year as I don't brew during hot weather, too much risk of contamination.

Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
Yes I batch primed.
What I think happened is, I allowed the one in the pic to warm up a bit. I generally like my beer cold from the fridge.
But thinking about it, bitter is never served that cold.

Re: Are These Brown Floaters Normal?
Ian,
The Coopers kits normally say to add 1Kg Brewing Sugar.
I prefer to add 1Kg DME (dried malt extract).
I find that the brewing sugar makes the beer feel a bit `thin`.
You can get Extra Light, Light, Medium and Dark Spraymalt (DME) depending on what you are brewing.
Hope this helps.
What Kit are you doing?
