I am not sure if you have used one?
I have for many years to great effect. They are also recommended by trading standards.
Each to their own, of course.
How do you use it, MB? And what is the recommendation given by trading standards? Probably for checking surface temperature of chilled meats, cooked foods, etc.
What 'great effect' have you seen?
Apologies for being a bit combative, but absolutely no way would I use an IR gun to check the temperature of my mash.

Think about this...
The braumeister has a short probe at the bottom of a 40 litre vessel. You can hardly call that ideal.
Perspective.
Any thermometer only reads what "surface" it touches.
My IR gun, will do a scan average or a spot temp. I use it in my large 500l fermenters everytime, before and after stirring. For bread dough and all manner of other non food applications.
At the end of the day are you using it as a guide or an absolute?
Me... I navigate, the sat nav is one tool in the box, not a blue line to follow mindlessly?
Edit: Oops. Should have said 40 litre vessel

I thought you had a 20 litre BM. 500 litre FV how does that work?

Liquid is recirculating, completely different in my opinion.
Not any thermometer just measures surface temp, you wouldn’t check your chicken is cooked with IR!
I’d rather know the temp of the wort, not a rough measure.

I do have a BM 20 but to be fair they hold about 40 litres.
The 500l FV works fine, I use electric blankets to and insulation to maintain the temps.

That would be silly. Think of the infection risk, the 500l FV's don't have air-locks.
Hmm. Come to think of it, neither dioes the BM20.
You know I ferment-in-kettle with the BM. Have you not been paying attention?

Yes I have been paying attention. You said you ferment in a 500 litre FV.

They are nice very nice. All 3 of mine are plastic, but don't have lids.
