I've been busy with my Dad's estate, clearing house out only for sale to fall through. So much cleaning gardening etc that I've not brewed since last year. I was lining up some lager batches but the weather is now too warm. I do have an old fridge to convert to a temperature controlled chamber, but it will be too big for the shed as things are configured so I have to stay with ambient temperature for now.
Still need to get brewing so I'll do the Shed recipe but with different yeast. I have a couple of crossmyloof kolsch, but thinking of just going with the US05 - crossmyloof version again.
What do you all think???
Too hot for Pils..
Re: Too hot for Pils..
34/70 can go up to 22*C. Wrap FV in a wet towel if temp inside shed threatens to get above about 20. pitch twice the recommended amount to speed things up. Nowhere reasonably sheltered outside for the fridge?
Re: Too hot for Pils..
I did the last batch between 11 and 15 ambient over 3 weeks, was very good, that's the way I'd like to do it. Looking around the garden for somewhere sensible to put the fridge and extension box but needs to be minimally intrusive!

Re: Too hot for Pils..
Use a clean ale yeast. The only temperature control I have is what my basement is. I sometimes brew a lager grainbill with ale yeast in the summer and an ale grainbill with a lager yeast in the winter.
I'm just here for the beer.
Re: Too hot for Pils..
I've reconfigured the shed as it was too hot to be standing over a boiling cauldron of wort today. Removed one workbench and replaced it with a different shaped table, bit of fiddling and I have a big polystyrene box attached to the old fridge that my 60L spiedel fermenters will fit in nicely. LAger is go, hopefully get some started over the weekend!
But thanks for the advice/opinions anyway.

That’s good. Difficult to beat a proper lager yeast for a lager. I’m currently lagering mine on the yeast ready for the summer. First time at lagering on the yeast in primary.

Re: Too hot for Pils..
We have a 60L batch sitting at 11.5 degrees C since Saturday. It actually got cooled below that as it turned out my stc1000 was set to 5C and the buttons were not working so couldn't change that, it was down to about 8 when I discovered this. I tried connecting the piless brewpi I made but never set up last year, only to find that misbehaves and constantly restarts. Troubleshooting consumed much time, so I solved the problem with an amazon order for another stc1000 for £10.99 I rewired everything so it would be easy to switch to the brewpi if I get it to work properly.

I’m sure it turns out fine. I’d be more concerned about a temperature rise with a lager fermentation.
