Bluebird is now go

Post by prodigal2 » Fri Aug 24, 2007 6:57 pm

Hi all I had a opportunity to brew and grabbed it with both hands, so I did the bluebird as per Normans post and Barrow Boy
My recipe for 17L
2.5kg pale malt
119grms crystal
50grms torrified wheat

28grms Challenger(7.7%AA) 90mins
7grms Challenger 15mins plus yeast vit and irish moss
9grms Challenger 0 mins

yeastS04 with a 1L DFS(DaaBs Flying Starter)

I now have just under 18L at 1.037

Apart from being constantly hassled about a job I'm doing on sunday in Madrid all went well.

This will be my first use of torrified wheat and all I want is my head to last longer than it takes to go from the kitchen to my office.
I will probably drop into a secondry end of next week leave for a week and bottle in the usual manner.

Cheers to all that posted and contributed in the all challenger thread, yet again JBKF makes all the difference.
And DaaB your Batch sparge and Hop calcs are a real joy to use and hit the money every time 8)

Good work Prodigal, I add TW to my brews now & it definately aids head retention. Looks like a tasty one 8)

Cheers chaps, I wanted to get my head around the challenger taste so this should be a goody. I think I will do about another7-8 single hop brews over the next few months to get to know the hops(this includes 3-4 lagers over the winter). 8)

Yay, good one p2. Did you remember the salt? (I didn't)

And I like the very cosmopolitan "....job I'm doing in Madrid on Sunday..." 8)

Top work there P2. Oddly enough I've just scribbled out a near identical recipe for tomorrow except I'm trying the "little and often" approach with the hops. I am wanting to see if it makes a difference to my usual method of one helping at the start of the boil one helping at fifteen and one when the boiler goes off.

Glad it went off without a hitch. I can vouch for the head retaining properties of torrified wheat, I've been adding it to my last few brews and it does the job a treat. Hopefully I'll be able to put a "pub style" head on my pints when my cornies arrive once I've ordered them!

I had a little left over from the sparge to make the flying starter (as it seems to have been called ).
Fame and notoriety claims very few men

Stick your stamp on it before someone else does

Yes I did remember the salt, albeit 20minuutes into the boil.

Well you have steered a group of us in a good direction, its only fair that you get the recognition 8) And the is something very reassuring seeing the yeasties take control of the wort within a couple of hours

Good luck with that JP, it is the week of the challenger by the looks of it then  I thought you were off in the Dales, did you find a big spider in your camping gear? :=P
BarrowBoy wrote:And I like the very cosmopolitan "....job I'm doing in Madrid on Sunday..." Cool
getting up at 2:30am on a sunday to get a flight, to go train a load of people to use some new equipment is VERY un-cosmopolitan. I think my work carbon footprint is about the size of a 747. Which reminds me I must go and hug some trees soon

I've already been P2 and returned. Me Ma and Da have a big old caravan in the middle of nowhere so we weren't camping. I can't imagine camping with two dogs, especially not my two!

We did it once, strangely enough in the dales. Lets just say we didn't do it again. Though it was very funny when my wife fell into a river when our 2 young(as they were then) springers went for a swimming expedition. sharing a tent with 2 wet smelly springers and a very grumpy wet wife took the edge of that day.
