Which sugar?

Post by louthepoo » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:38 am

As my boiler isn't working and i haven't finished making my new one up i thought i'd have another go at a kit in the mean time.

I bought a Geordie Bitter kit for £3 in an offer in Morrisons (sounds like a bargain) so i'm doing that. The question i have is what do you reccommend i use in place of sugar.

I'm not going to the HBS for a while so i'm using what i've got in the house which is:

Golden syrup, Honey, 500g Brewing Sugar (Dextrose?), white cane sugar :-# , Brown sugar, Treacle.

so any ideas? I've used the syrup before and it turned out alright, even swimbo drank it

The Golden syrup turned out ok, haven't tried the treacle, i just thought i'd put down all the sugary stuff i have in the kitchen :D

I bought the brewing sugar as it was in a recipe i was going to do a while ago but have since found out it wasn't the best addition to the recipe so have got a full bag of it, does it do much to the flavour? was thinking of giving it a go :?

honey is very nice, but works in golden ales i think more, not sure it would be all that in a bitter

I made my currently drinking Yorkshire Bitter with brewers sugar and... well... it isn't nasty, but that is as far as I will take the praise! Tastes very homebrew like. The Coopers Pale that I made up using 500g Malt Wheat and 500g Light Spraymalt has only been maturing for a bit over a week now and is stunning by comparison already. Considering that I would avoid the brewers sugar and plain white sugar straight off.

Given that I think I would try a mix of honey and something else... perhaps honey and treacle - god knows what you will end up with, but it would be fun to find out! Or make the whole thing up with one or t'other and see what happens :D
