Filling up

Post by Beatnik69 » Wed Aug 29, 2007 9:40 am

Hi all. I'm a newby hoping to kick off my first brew today. I wanted to ask what the best method for filling my 5 gallon fv would be. Obviously it won't fit in the sink in the kitchen. Unless anyone can advise me otherwise I'll be filling up saucepans and pouring them in.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The other alternative - if you have one - is the bath

I use a 1l jug and the kitchen sing most the time, but am having thoughts about fitting a Belfast sink in the Utility room for brew days when I get around to the rennovations in there.

Another alternative would be to pop a hose onto the kitchen tap and fill up on the floor.

the way i do it is to use a large 2 gal saucepan which i first dissolve any sugars into.

I put the kit in the bucket (after warming first), then add the sugar disolved into about 2l of water (the heating of the saucepan to disolve the sugar ensures sterility) then use said pan to pour water into the Fv from a height giving the wort good aireation. As its a large pan i only have to fill it twice (give or take)

Hope this helps

Hi Beatnik

A method I used when brewing kits was to buy 20l of water from the supermarket in 10 2l bottles (£1.70) and use that to make the kit up. Then you could pour the beer back into the bottles and condition them after your primary fermentation is complete.

I have two FV's with taps, so fill one by taking the shower head off the wavey pipe thing and use that to fill one, treat with campden, fill any kettles/pans that i need water for that will end up in the brew to make the starting wort, then sit it on the edge of the side, and let it pour out the tap into the fv into the wort for aereation. works a charm.

I run the cold tap and put a jug under it

I then syphon the water from the jug into a 5 gallon FV, treat the water with half a campden tablet then let the water from the FV fall from worktop height via its tap onto the kit in my fermenting bucket. Once it's topped up to the required level I then thrash the living daylights out of it for 5 mins with a paint stirrer on the end of a cordless drill.

Pitch the yeast and retire to a safe distance......

you can buy hose pipe fittings of most taps and run a hose from the tap

Unfortunately we've got a mixer tap in the kitchen which won't accept hose connectors, and I don't fancy the shower option as it runs from the tank rather than the mains.

My taps won't accept hose attachments either. I bought an outdoor tap kit but rather than drilling a hole etc to site the tap on the outside wall, I keep the hose curled up under the sink which is ideal for cleaning, filling up etc.

You're not the only one ther Mr Lil, since moving to AG I find I need more then the 20l of water I was used to and seeing as I have to brew outside the garden hose is ideal. I run it for a bit in order to expel any water that's been sat in there for a while before I use the stuff though oh and it get's boiled as well.

That's not a bad idea actually!!! :D I might just buy a spare hose and use it for brewing. The only thing I'm worried about is that our mains water has wee floaters in it, like little bits of dead plant life. I don't know what it is and hope it won't affect my brew.
