For some strange reason, that FV full of stout is making me think of beef stew with stout in it, boiled potatoes, greens and dumplings washed down with a couple of pints of stout :=P
A good reason to wish autumn in :wink:

Looking good by the way Vossy

Sammy Smiths Oatmeal, one of my all time faves. Picture of the boil looks like your boiling Mr Bracken :shock:

Yep 8) Just a few wraps of PTFE tape and they fit like a glove :lol:

Excellent. No need to buy those expensive stainless bits from morebeer then....shiny as they are. :roll:

Took this brew out of the fermenting cupboard prior to racking to secondary tomorrow.
Down to 1011 and the taste....lots and lots of chocolate. No fruityness as yet but that may well develope with time 8)

Racking this to corny tomorrow and had to sample it....like you do :roll:

It's VERY chocolaty with lots of coffee, and the roast malt is coming through, though it's not as smooth as it could be...give it time. I can imagine when this is cool and carbonated it's going to be a winner 8)

Having sampled this yesterday, I am keen to give it a try myself as it is lovely.

Just entered your recipe into Beersmith but the SRM is coming out in the low 20s rather than 68 as your recipe suggests. Obviously the oats will provide some colour once roasted but even if I set the oats contribution to 100SRM, I still only get 30 SRM for the recipe.

I'm not overly worried because 30 SRM looks pretty dark to me anyway and my Eskimo Stout is about 24 SRM but just wondering why the disagreement??

Different methods of calculation, one taking extract efficiency into the equation and one not?

Different SRM values for the ingredients?

The recipe was taken from Clone Brews by T&M Szamatulski.
The recipe's are extract based and I used their conversion to an all grain recipe.

At the front of the book it says to convert the SRM to EBC multiply the SRM by 2.65 and then subtract 1.2 from the total.

I get around 28 on Beer Smith which would be 73

This still doesn't explain why Beer Smith differs :?

If in BeerSmith I set the oats to 1 SRM then I get 27.4 SRM which I guess is your 28. If I change BeerSmith to use EBC then I get 53.9.

According to the BeerSmith manual,
BeerSmith wrote:BeerSmith uses the new formula for converting colors:
EBC = 1.97 SRM
Perhaps the book uses an older scaling factor that has for some reason been changed.
It goes on to say:
BeerSmith wrote:BeerSmith uses the equation by Dan A. Morey to estimate beer color, which is a power equation fit to earlier more limited beer color estimating equations. It holds for beer colors with SRM < 50.

The equation is:

SRM color = 1.4922 * (MCU ** 0.6859)

where

MCU = (SRM_color * Grain_weight_lbs)/Volume_gallons
Not sure this gets me far but it's not that important really - just interesting :wink:
