DRB's Brambling Beauty(ish)

Post by prodigal2 » Wed Sep 05, 2007 6:46 pm

Greetings one and all I banged this out today:
Brew length 18L

3.45Kg pale malt
225grms amber
195grms Torrified wheat

12grms BX @90mins
37grms BX @15mins
13grms BX @0mins

I got 1,044 OG and I have used Some dried yeast that the local Micro uses for ales(I think its Nottingham, but my micro are a tad caggey about naming their yeast) in a 1L DFS(DaaB Flying Starter), and by the smell in the FV its doing a cracking job already.
The FV is in a room at 18C.

No Photos I'm afraid, but this was AG7 one more and I will have done more AG brews than kits 8)

Oh and I batch sparged as usual and used DaaBs calc  As ever it was plumb bob on the figures :=P

I should add that I had no flaked barley, but I thought what the heck.
One down note my wort was not as clear as usual, which I can only attribute to the amount of TW that I used as my technique, mash temps, mash time and boil length where all as I have done for the last 4 brews. Oh well as long as it tastes good that is all that matters.

More like a prodigious brewer than a prodigal one

A waft of greenness that I assosiate with blackberries, though in truth the homestead has the great smell of malt at the moment.

Cheers Vossy, I think my first 10months of brewing, have been a revelation, I still have so much to learn, both in technique and with my pallet.

Who are they trying to kid, there aren't that many dried yeasts available, if they were really worth their salt it really wouldn't matter what people knew about their recipes
At this moment in time I'm not too fussed, but seeing as he is the only micro for 400km, he may be nervy about competition. Seeing as the market here is so small. Beer round these parts falls normally into 3 categories, Euro pils, Belgian Head bangers, or German beers, he has gone for a mix of the above AND a UK style ale or 2. Its worth noting the only UK beers I tend to see in Spanish bars are Bass and Fosters( Bass I understand, BUT FOSTERS??????)

1L DFS(DaaB Flying Starter)
You gotta love the DFS!

I (and everyone who tried it) really enjoyed DRB's Bramling Beauty (which I renamed legless frog after an unfortunate lawn mowing incident on brewday) you'll love it ! Sounds like you had a good one, when is ag8 planned?

AG8 I would like to do within the next 7 days. Though what to do is the problem  of the 4 hops I have at the moment I have tried each one now in a single hop brew so, I may try JP's suggestion:
http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7034

But I am unsure as it seems to be quite a few differing hops there for me to get my head round, as a learning experience, though I am sure it is a tasty beer. Time to relook at Norms Almanac again, or just do another ZDO that Matt came up with(a very good brew, which will be done again soon). If I had some black malt a stout would be on the cards, but hay ho

Top work P2, sounds like a good 'un 8). I just kegged my AG 9 tonight, reckon its going to be the best so far.

I've decided will be the last of the one malt one hop brews for a while as now the nights are drawing in my tastebuds are asking for something a little more compex

The Simmonds Bitter recipe seems to get the thumbs-up all round, although I don't know if it qualifies as a high-gravity brew, unlike some of the others. On the upside it would probably be ready by December, so maybe that and 6.x percenter, which would hopefully also be ready in time to smooth over the christmas season

I have just skimmed the top and I must admit, this beer smells divine. And it is also starting to clear nicely(thank god for that).
Oh and within 2 hours of pitching the yeast there was a nice yeasty crust doing the do yesterday so yet again a DFS starter is the way forward, and it introduces a small amount of break material to get the yeasties happy and not enough to develop haze central.

And SW you better get brewing so you have your 6% ready for crimbo

Btw, has anyone done the BB and dry hopped with Bramling Cross? If so what was the aroma like?
